Midwife vs. OB

Just wondering which you all chose & why?

Re: Midwife vs. OB

  • My insurance dictated that I saw an OB. I wanted a midwife after watching the business of being born. But I love my OB now and wouldn't change to a midwife at this point.

  • I'm using a midwife. I'd prefer to give birth at her birth center but my SO and every one else close to us is pushing for a hospital birth. I'm willing to compromise on location but I'm sticking to my guns about using a midwife!
  • My practice has both. My first appt is actually with the midwife. I'll eventually see all of the OBs as well.

  • I also watched the business of being born. There are some very valid reasons for using a midwife for some people but im using my ob & i think i'll take the epideral too!
  • My first daughters birth with an OB was incredibly traumatizing , and around here that seems to be the case with a lot of my friends also. Definitely going with midwives this time.

I used a midwife (in a hospital) with both of my girls. I achieved a med free, natural birth both times thanks to their help and support :-) We plan on using them again this time.

  • I'm switching to a new OB for this pregnancy after multiple recommendations. I am plannig a vba2c and they are the most vbac friendly providers in our area.

  • For the app's during my pregnancy I'll be going every other to my doc and midwife and when giving birth it will be at the hospital with the midwives there and there is always a OB that can be called in if need along with other medical staff. Epidural and other pain relief options will be available if wanted or needed. If the birth drags out like it did with my DS I'm going for epi again!
  • I'm going with a midwife, as well as a doula for birth support. there is an excellent practice in my city that has a good relationship with the nearby hospital.
I'm actually planning a home birth - and the midwives I am using specialize in them. My mom planned a home birth with me and really after my mother's and grandmother's deaths in a hospital. being in them sickens me.
Of course in case of complications I will get my laboring self directly to a hospital that is very close by.
  • For my first pregnancy, I set up my appointments with a midwife operating within an OB practice. After my daughter was considered high risk, I was referred to the OBs. They were very understanding of my wishes to have a natural birth and, other than having to be induced by breaking my water on her due date, I had a completely natural birth in the hospital. They even let me drink water while laboring! YES!! I just did my research and showed them that I knew what was best for me and my child.
  • I went with both. I had a backup OB that had nurse midwives in his practice and I went with a Certified Professional Midwife for my planned homebirth. My labor lasted too long since my water broke first and I was making any progress so we transferred right into the hospital without any flax from the OB. My homebirth midwife kept in contact the entire pregnancy with him, and once per trimester I would see him just to keep him inform. He's very understanding of my reasons for wanting a homebirth and said even though it didn't work this first time, he said it would the next time and that he will gladly do my backup care again.
  • I am going to a CNM center at a local hospital. I wanted to do a home water birth with a CPM and a doula but I would have to pay $3000 out of pocket because Tricare doesn't cover "voodoo crap". So my backup is a very highly rated midwifery center in a very nice hospital. The birthing rooms have queen size beds and a large jacuzzi tub for water births or pain relief during labor. The only downside is they require you to hire a doula if you've never had an unmedicated birth before. Anyone know how much they cost or if they're covered by Tricare Standard?

  • Midwife last time and this time. I'd be terrified to have a hospital birth. I left the birth center halfway through labor to get Popsicles at the store. Breathed through contractions in the checkout line. Went back to the center and ate said Popsicles while I continued to labor there. Absolutely cannot imagine doing it any other way than one I have the freedom to move, eat, leave, drink, as I see fit.

    That is hilarious.
  • I'm seeing a midwife.  There's really no reason, though.  My doctor referred me to the local hospital Obstetrics and Midwifery department and the receptionist asked me "OB or midwife?"  I am so new to this all, and didn't really even think that I would have to answer that question right away, so I just said "midwife."  I see a midwife on Wednesday.  I have the option to switch to an OB if that makes me feel more comfortable.  Honestly, I just want someone who's going to do their best to accommodate my wishes and keep me and the baby safe!
