HELP ME PLEASE!!

i just got home with my son today. I desperately want to be successful with breastfeeding. I also have Reynaud Phenomenon. It causes unbearable nipple pain even with a perfect latch. I thought I could work through it, but it is sending shooting electric type pain through my body.

I can't reach my doctor until Monday and they won't consult me on this over the phone because the on call doctor doesn't know me.

I have formula, but I know if I use it I can quickly lose my supply.

I have a pump I can use to keep my milk flowing, but I worry it won't help the pain.

Any help please?? I'm desperate.

  • If you can't bear the pain don't beat yourself up over it. If you have to use formula to get through the night you're still a good mother. An IBCLC will be able to get you back to breastfeeding.

  • If the pump feels better than the babe, you could also pump and bottle feed to help for the night.

  • Don't beat yourself up if it's too much and you want to switch to formula. I had to with DD and I had too many people making me feel guilty but after a few days I realized I was so much happier and so was she. Therefore it was worth it. Happy momma will make a happy baby and as long as he is being fed it doesn't matter how you feed him. This time around we made the decision to formula feed for our own reasons and I'm not letting anyone try to put me down for our decision.
  • Dd has a fierce latch. The pain was excruciating to start. Using different nursing positions and a nursing pillow helped immensely. Lanolin cream afterwards was essential. I don't know about your particular syndrome so I don't know if that will help. A nurse line or nursing hot line as PP have suggested is a good idea. Best of luck. (And I have totally pumped for a break to let my nipples do some healing. It might be worth a try.)
  • Cover your nipples as soon as you are done nursing (this is the opposite of what they normally tell you when nursing, but it's necessary with raynauds). Wool breast pads helped me so much! Hang in there! I know it's painful, just try to keep your nips warm!
  • Try a nipple shield. It was my life savor and got me through the first month.
  • Nipple shield with lanolin. I used the shield for 11 months because it lessened the pain
  • @Lilmanx‌ congrats on your LO! I don't have Reynauds, but I had the same issues coming home. Nipples were sore for sure and I certainly felt overwhelmed and helpless feeling like I couldn't feed my own daughter. It does get better, like the other ladies mentioned, I also pumped to get a break for the nips. My nips cracked from my LOs latch, and hubby assured me that formula for one night or as supplement won't hurt the baby. If anything it gave all of us a break. At the end of the day, whatever you decide, do what's best for you and baby :) don't let other people get to you. Good luck!
