Colic/milk allergy?

Lo is a month old and every night from 6-10 pm screams no matter what is done. I'm assuming colic and ped agrees. I try gripe, colic care, gas drops.. Nada
But now today he's been that way all day. Not sure if I should switch formula to one without milk. But he's not spitting up or having any other milk allergy signs.
Thoughts?

Re: Colic/milk allergy?

  • Nope. Not an allergy. Just a normal developmental phase to ride out.

  • Have you heard of happiest baby on the block? My baby would cry and cry for hours in the evening, but the 5 s's have changed everything! Google it for a video demo, I don't think you have to read the book. The 5 s's are: swaddle, shhhhhh, side or stomach position, sway, and if possible, suckle. In combination, it works like a charm! I've had my baby asleep by 8:00 every night since we started using the technique. (For what it's worth, I thought my baby hated swaddling, but with the other s's she falls asleep quickly and stays asleep longer).
  • My LO is having the same issues, but at varying times of the day.  He is not quite 6 weeks yet and everyday the crying times seems to get worse.  Today, once he woke up he cried off and on for 4 hours and he battled gas the whole time.  He also seems to want to eat more (pumping + formula) during these times.  He was already switched early on to a gentle formula.  I am so concerned that he might have lactose sensitivity like me.  I'm freezing my milk for the next 3 days to see if it gets any better on strictly formula but really feel for him.  He's sleeping right now on the boppy on his tummy and seems to be fast asleep.  Anyone else got any other tips?

  • I'm trying the alimentum formula now. It's been 24 hrs and he's still miserable. Hoping to see a change soon. If not I don't know what to do. Even my other kids cd t stand the crying anymore
  • My 4 week old was having the same issues...seemed to be getting worse each day. He had been getting constipated on regular formula and gentle, also soy...so We swapped to nutramigen hoping that it would help, but seemed to actually make it worse...at that point we were getting ready to just accept that he was colicky and that we couldn't fix it. he screamed and cried for almost a whole day with only a few 20 min naps. He also wanted to eat all the time to soothe himself. By chance I ran across a list of symptoms for acid reflux in babies and he had almost all of them, which I was mistaking for gas pain - I'm a first time mom so this is all new to me! Called the doctor, got a prescription for liquid zantac and swapped to enfamil reguline to help with the constipation and I swear I have a different baby now. This morning he actually laid in his crib and cooed at his stuffed animal until he fell asleep all by himself! We've only been on the medicine for a day and a half, and already my baby is happier than ever!!!
  • Ladies-- babies cry for a period of time. You aren't feeding wrong or anything. It's a developmental phase every baby goes through. As long as you hold them & love them through these crying fits then they should be fine.

Yes, it's nerve-wracking, emotional & difficult. However, it's so normal. Hang in there.

The previous formula you were using can take up to a couple weeks or sometimes longer to completely cycle out of his system, if it is truly a formula issue.
  • My bubba has taken to crying in the evenings too as will as sooky through the day, I thought it was gas or reflux too, my nurse sent me to purplecrying.info which explained a lot. It's hard to take the crying but I am trying to just hold her and offer all the comfort I can until she (hopefully) grows out of it
