Ultrasound tech ever wrong about the sex?

We had an ultrasound at 16 weeks for medical reasons, thankfully everything is fine. The ultrasound tech told us it looked like a boy. I feel like that's very early though and that we should wait until our regular anatomy 20 week ultrasound and see what they say then before we start to plan for a boy. Just wondering if they're wrong often, especially that early?? Anyone been told what sex they were having and then that not have been correct?

Re: Ultrasound tech ever wrong about the sex?

  • It does happen, and there is more room for error the earlier they try to determine the sex. I'd wait for your anatomy scan and then start planning.

However, my anatomy scan was at 17 weeks and the sex was able to be determined easily. This is not always the case for everyone.

If in doubt, wait for the anatomy scan before buying anything blue.

Or buy ahead, since it's just a colour.

Up to you personally on that last comment lol

But it has been known for even the anatomy scan to be incorrect and the parents are surprised at birth. But it's not overly common. Today's technology is pretty good.

I hope though that your scan shows that you have a healthy baby :)
  • It's possible it could be wrong. I would say that it's more likely to be wrong early on if it's a girl.. Or.. How ever one is supposed to word that to make sense. Supposedly a baby boy can be seen at 14 weeks? I'm 18 weeks and just had my anatomy scan and it's a girl (number 3).. So 17 isn't to early to tell.

  • I don't think 16 weeks is terribly early, but I have heard of a few techs getting it wrong at about 20 weeks. I imagine that has more to do with the position of the baby.

  • Our tech told us at our 12 week she thought it was a girl, but she obviously couldn't say for sure. A week later it was confirmed through our genetic test. As PP said, less room for error with a boy - I would say it is a safe bet they are right.
  • My 19 week anatomy scan had two people saying he was a girl. Two weeks later at a sex check scan he had grown an extra body part. Bad positioning plus bad techs.

  • It's possible but my thinking is that they wouldn't speak up if they weren't sure or she would've let you know that she wasn't positive. I found out at 16 weeks also but waited until my 20 week appt to start buying things.
