Medela Breast Pump

I know breast pumps have been discussed in great length and I'm almost certain I'll be getting the Medela Double Electric Breast Pump. My insurance will cover it in full which is awesome. I have the option to upgrade to the Medela Pump In Style Advanced Breast Pump w/Metro Bag if I want for $110. The upgrade has the bag, a battery pack, extra bottles and I think something else. Does anyone know if the battery pack and few other extras are worth the $110? I'm not sure when I'd need the battery unless the power is out for an extended period of time. Also, if you own this pump do you like it? I go to the doctor next week and will need to get a script to order the pump.

Re: Medela Breast Pump

  • The battery pack is 24.99 on amazon. Many actually buy their own bag to carry it in.

  • My insurance was the same way. I upgraded to the shoulder bag that had the cooler and some extra bottles for $69 but had to buy the battery pack and car jack option separately. On their own the battery pack and car jack were $30 each from Babies R Us.
  • I ordered the exact same pump because I heard such great reviews about it, however I didn't order any of the accessories yet because I want to wait and see if I need them. I may just add them for my registry :)

  • Thanks! Adding to the registry is a good idea. Even if no one buys it I'll get 10% off with the completion card.

If you're in the US breast pumps are now covered under insurance. Just ask your doctor for a script and they can refer you to a medical supply store in your area. Or your insurance can tell you which companies they work with.
  • I much preferred the ameda purely yours.

  • I bought the battery pack the last time, and might have used it once or twice.  I found that the car adapter was a good deal more useful.  Seems when you can't find an outlet somewhere when you aren't at work or home and trying to pump, there is more privacy in a car than hiding somewhere with no power and using batteries to power it.

I'm pretty sure that in the US they HAVE to cover it by law now.
I know with Medicaid they only cover rentals from WIC offices.
@DeerHunterBride‌ I initially thought the same thing, but a few weeks ago there was a similar thread and for some ladies their insurance was grandfathered without the pump coverage.
@Latifahsj‌ talk to your doctor and see if there's anything he/she can do to help with the process.
  • I got the PISA 2 yrs ago and loved it! When I got them the insurance gave you one with a bag and extra cooler section and bottles I see now they have gotten a little cheaper ;) I wouldn't pay an extra 110 for those things tho...I think a car adapter is useful but wait to see if you need it and adding it to your registry is a good idea :)
  • Honestly, the Medela bags scream "IMMA BREASTPUMP BAG" so maybe consider spending that money on a different bag? Also, on top of the battery pack, you can also get the Medela brand cooler with bottle for $25 (but use registry completion for at least 15-20% off)

  • I paid a nominal price to get the Medela On The Go Tote from Aeroflow Healthcare.  When I got it through them I wasn't just paying for the bag..I also got a battery pack which you DEFINITELY want, a cooler bag, ice pack, and some storage containers.  Eventually you're going to need all of those accessories and buying them all separately would cost a lot more money.  Plus, I didn't have to go to the store and get it..it was shipped right to my door.
  • Zulily has the Medela messenger bag set right now for $47.99 which is a great deal! It's under the "bottles up" section! I wasn't planning on getting a Medela bag because I was being cheap but thought that was a great deal so I am going to try it out and see!
