Super late intro and feeding problems

hi all! I gave birth to a little boy on September 29 and foolishly did not utilize this app as much as I should've since you all seem to have a lot of insight! To make a long story short, my son has had a ton of feeding issues. He weaned himself from nursing at 7 weeks due to undiagnosed thrush and we have had a lot of issues since then and him getting it cleared up. Little by little, his appetite has diminished. A good day for him is 24 oz before bed but some days we are lucky for 18. He gets 5 feedings per day and then what he takes during the night. He doesn't seek out food and feedings always involve crying. We have seen a gastro who mentioned a feeding tube and the pediatrician said he sees it as a possibility as he is not gaining weight or growing. He is already on 1.5 mL of Zantac twice a day for silent reflux. We have second opinions at s teaching hospital Monday. Does anyone have any experience?

Re: Super late intro and feeding problems

  • You need to see a speech-language pathologist for feeding. I'm a lurker/ previous poster but I'm an slp you can message me if you have questions. An slp can help avoid a g-tube

  • @dani0783‌ we saw one yesterday who said it is in no way mechanical and seems that he eats enough to take the hunger edge off but is in pain so stops as soon as he is semi satisfied.
  • I don't have any advice, but I just wanted to say I am so sorry you are going thru that - it sounds incredibly stressful.

  • @anewadventure‌ we seem to be going in spurts. We switched to Alimentum and switched medicines but the dosage is so high that he spits it out. We are going back to the gastro today because his intake during the day still isn't enough and we have lots of waking up and irritability during the day as well. Some days are better than others. Thanks so much for asking.
  • i'm sorry to hear that you guys are still having issues. i know that the alimentum is really expensive, too. is this something he might grow out of, or have less struggles with once you start solids? do they think it is an allergy problem or a digestive problem?

  • @anewadventure‌ we just left he gastro- we are switching meds again in hopes he gets it down to manage the reflux and she suggested starting solids now at 19.5 weeks. I'm nervous.

i understand being nervous. did you get some guidelines for starting the solids? do they care if you do oatmeal, cereal, sweet potatoes, avocados?

i know moms who have been told to start at that age with their LOs. you'll know if he's not ready because he'll just force everything back out of his mouth, lol!

let us know how it goes.

  • @anewadventure‌ she said to start with fruit starting with P to help his constipation. We will try a veg after this 3 day trial so he doesn't get used to the sweet! He seemed to love it!

I had/have similar issues with my DS. On a good day he will take 26-28oz but it's a struggle to get him to eat every time. He was 10th percentile. His pedi recommended we concentrate his formula just a little bit (It is 1/2 tsp per 40ml more then what the formula states) to get more calories in him. DS is gaining better now but we don't see his pedi for another 3 weeks for a recheck. Maybe ask you pedi if that is an option first before going for the g tube.
  • We had pretty severe feeding issues that involved terrible reflux and very little weight gain but didn't have thrush. Controversial for some but the ONLY thing that kept our LO fed was to add beechnut rice to his nutrimigen formula. He also switched to compounded Lansoprazole from Zantac. He was a new baby after 3 days. Now normal weight and very happy. It is tough but there is a light at the end:) good job for reaching out!!!
  • They also mentioned tubing forgot to add that. We tried this instead and gave it a month. Were able to avoid it. Good luck!
