Sensative skin

LO has very bad eczema. It's so dry that after she has been crying the skin where her tears were gets dry!!! And she's a huge spitter- so her chin is constantly dry because no matter how hard I try I can't catch it always right away.

We were given a Johnson & Johnson soap/lotion gift set but I may look into experimenting with some other brands because I feel like it may be making her skin worse. We put Aquaphor ointment on her cheeks/face at night and it works AMAZING. (My husband also uses it for his dry cracked hands. ) It's SO expensive but so worth it!

I was just curious:
1) what soap and lotion are you using on your baby?
2) what detergent do you use for baby's clothes? (nothing to do with dry skin just curious)
3) any other baby products that you can't live without/go to items?

Re: Sensative skin

  • 1. Aveeno baby has a nice smell when it's on her
    2. Tide free & clear but we also use tide sport with no issues
    3. In terms of baby skin products I have to say I DON'T recommend the honest baby shampoo, not that it causes any issues but it's so strong my baby smells like orange dish soap after a bath. Yeck

    1) what soap and lotion are you using on your baby? Original Sprout - it's what our hospital used for her first bath and smells amazing. For sensitive skin, too!

    2) what detergent do you use for baby's clothes? Tide Free and Clear

    3) any other baby products that you can't live without/go to items? Our cool mist humidifier seems to have helped her skin a lot. We also massage some of The Honest Company lotion on her legs before bed time. It has a very mild scent.

  • My LOs don't have eczema but I do- for me Eucerin has been the best OTC product to treat it- I've never tried it, but they make a baby line that might be worth trying :)
  • I agree I wouldn't use Johnson and Johnson or probably any typical baby lotion and wash. I would look into stuff that's meant for dry skin that doesn't have any type of fragrance.

DD has ezcema on her face too and I had an it really bad a couple years all over my body (to the point where my skin turned purple) so I feel their pain.

I've been applying auqapuor and some cortizone for ezcema and its seems to be helping.

    1) Im going to continue to use Johnson and Johnson but will be using auqapuor will she is damp to re-moisturize her skin. Also don't rub the water off the skin, pat it off.

    2) we use all free and clear

    3) nosefrida lol. I was so grossed out when it was gifted to me but we use it every morning.

Eta to clarify it was on my body, not face

  • We also use aveeno. For laundry, we use tide free and clear. With DS, he had really dry skin especially during the winter months. For his face we used aquaphor but for the rest of his body, we used regular vaseline. Out of the bath, we'd pat him dry and apply the vaseline. It worked to seal in the moisture. A lot of the lotions out there have ingredients that further dry out the skin so we steered clear of those.

    1) Johnson and Johnson head to toe wash for soap (no issues for us) and Burts Bees Vitamin E and Aloe lotion for sensitive skin, or their milk and honey lotion (which is what I use for myself). Basically whichever bottle I can find at the time.

    2) Dreft at the moment, but it's hard as hell to find so I'll be switching to All's dye/scent free variety as soon as we use up the last jug of Dreft

    3) Little Remidies Gripe Water. I need to get paid for all the advertising I do to my friends for that stuff. It works like charm for us. Also, Huggies Pure and Natural diapers. Pips isn't tolerant at all of a wet diaper, but if for some reason I can't change her right away (car rides, ect.) she is usually content to wait if she wears those. Any other kind of diaper, Huggies or other brands, she gets pissed as hell and tells us all about how unhappy she is... Loudly... Lol.

  • Definately avoid scented things! My rule of thumb is the less ingredients in the soap or lotion the better. For soap I recomended earth mama angel baby soap (unscented) and for lotion 100% pure shea butter! Works amazing or you can simply use patrolium jelly, only downfall of that is it can leave grease stains on fabrics so use carefully I tend to put on LOs face if he gets really chapped.
  • 1) what soap and lotion are you using on your baby?   We started with J & J head to toe wash, but the pedi gave us samples of the Eucerin soap/shampoo, so I ended up buying a big bottle of that to use.    Lotion, I bought Aveeno baby....Aveeno is the only lotion my skin can handle,  but I actually think its making his skin break out.   Still trying to figure out if thats the culprit......but I bought some of the Eucerin Aquaphor and it seems to be working better.  Its super thick like vaseline...so I don't rub it in,  I just get it all over my hands and then kinda dab it on him.

    2) what detergent do you use for baby's clothes? (nothing to do with dry skin just curious)     We are just using cheapie laundry soap now....but might try the free & clear stuff if the different lotion doesn't help.

    3) any other baby products that you can't live without/go to items?    Nothing really that I can think of.   Not really a product....but someone mentioned the White Noise app for their phone in a thread the other day.  I downloaded it and it has helped alot in the evenings this week when he is fussy and I am trying to cook dinner.  There are so many cool sounds on there, when he gets tired of one, I switch it to another and it keeps him content for awhile.

  • 1) what soap and lotion are you using on your baby? J&J wash / shampoo (clearly I'm in the minority); we rarely use lotion, but when we do it's Eucerin; we have a humidifier running 24/7 though and DC is humid anyway

    2) what detergent do you use for baby's clothes? Dreft, though will likely switch to a Free & Clear b/c it's expensive

    3) any other baby products that you can't live without/go to items? Chux pads over the changing pad cover. They cost about the same each as a diaper and I can't imagine not having them. We'd have to wash the cover 3x a day!

  •  In my experience, Johnsons baby washes and shampoo are DRYING. Like REALLY drying.

Im using Aveeno Baby soothing wash and lotion. Its unscented.

For laundry, either Tide Free or the sport one, she's fine with both. I cannot stand Dreft, the smell ugh.

My son has eczema and we stopped using J&J and switched to Everyday Shea. They sell it at Whole Foods and it has all natural light ingredients. I bought the baby version. We also started using Coconut oil for moisturizer and it works wonders. He barely gets any outbreaks now. We use Pyrex or All detergents free and clear. Whatever is on sale at the time and as long as it's free of dyes and fragrances, it works good. HTH :)

  • Both DSs have eczema.
    1. We use Aquifer bath soap/ Eucerine lotion (doesn't seem to help that much. We are looking into new lotions)

    2. All free & clear (I'm allergic to Tide)
Side note: was told by a dermatologist to not use dryer sheets (even the sensitive ones) and use instead the liquid sensitive fragrance free fabric softeners and it seemed to help a lot!

    3. Aquifer healing lotion heals chapped lips like no other

  • My 3 year old has had eczema since birth and while nothing has taken it away completely (even dermatologist prescribed creams) these have done the least damage

    1) Dove Baby sensitive baby wash and Cereve cream....not lotion, they can be drying.
    2) purex free and clear or arm and hammer free and clear....and no dryer sheets
    3) We're using an organic coconut, Shea Butter and essential oil salve that seems to help. It's a local home made company so it's useless to recommend but maybe look for something similar.

Keep baths 10 mins or less and put cream on wet skin. And apply cream at least twice a day.
