3rd Trimester

40 weeks, still no baby!

Hi fellow Moms!

Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions. I'm 40 weeks, 3cm dilated, 90% effaced and this little munchkin still refuses to come out!
I've been walking on the treadmill, stair master, bouncing on a yoga ball and ZIP. My doctor has said she will schedule an induction for next week if baby refuses to come out. I'm nervous because i really don't want to have a c section (no offense to Moms who have had a c section,I totally understand that everyone has a preference and that things happen during labor out of our control. I just don't want to go that route)
anyone have been induced and go on to deliver vaginally? My first was a vaginal delivery and my doctor said that she thinks it can possibly deliver vaginally again.

Thank you for any tips or experiences!

Yes, my suggestion is keep walking daily, have sex & wait it out.

I was almost 42 weeks when I gave birth to my son.

  • My "due date" is tomorrow so I'm right there with you. I'm having acupuncture tomorrow which I've heard can really help. I'm also having lots of sex, drinking red raspberry leaf tea, and walking. But all three of those things are things I just enjoy and do anyways so not just for the baby lol At this point I wish we had lied to everyone about my due date becuase I am getting so annoyed with the constant checking in to see if anything has changed... it can really get in your head if you let it but try not to!

There is no reason your doctor should doubt your ability to give birth. You are not even "post term" until 42 weeks. If everything is going well, there is no reason to consider induction right now. At 41 weeks you can start getting non-stress tests and consider induction closer to 42 if everything looks good still. Very few babies (like 3% I think) are born post 42 weeks. You also have to consider if you know your dates for sure, many women can be off my up to a week. It is totally normal to go a week or two over, and due dates are just guesses. The state of your cervix tells your literally nothing. My mom was totally closed the day before her short, easy labor with me 3 days past my due date, and I've known plenty of women thinking "any day now" due to being 3+ cm and went a week or more past the due date. My midwife has 4 children all of which were born around 43 weeks gestation, which is just the norm for her body and family. All healthy 6-7 lb babies.

I've known many women who were induced before labor began and had a vaginal birth. So if it comes down to that there is still a really good chance you will not end up with a cesarean. Good luck and let me know how it goes!

  • I've heard acupressure and acupuncture can help induce labor

  • Baby will come when it wants to come- could be today. I was 1 cm the day before I delivered- things can move quite quickly when they get going. Also induction doesn't mean a c-section. Try to relax, de-stress and that may do the most to getting baby to come out.
  • My first was induced a week and a half after my due date. I delivered vaginally even though I was induced. The hospital would not schedule an induction around the holiday(4th of July) so they said my option was to get induced at a week and a half late on July 2nd or take my chances and wait until July 10th which was 2 and a half weeks or so after my due date. I decided to get induced on the 2nd and we started at 8AM and by 1PM I had a baby boy in my arms.

  • I'm with ya! My DD was the 10th and Doc scheduled induction for the 16th, but if I still haven't gone into labor by then I'm gonna ask if they can reschedule that for later. just because I want to have more of a chance to do this without help from drugs. BTW this is baby # 4 for me. All my other girls where born on time on 4 weeks early, but I have never gone overdue. it makes me a little nervous but at the same time I figure when it's time it will happen ;)
  • I was induced at 41+ weeks for a failed NST. Cervix was hard, almost closed, not effaced at all.  I thought I would have a section for sure, but no. They prepped my cervix by inserting a foley bulb.  I walked around the hospital and ate and rested.  I felt some cervical change, a little bloody show, then they started the pitocin the next day. It took almost 24 hours of pitocin, and I got tired and asked for an epidural. Pushing was easy, no tears.  I was soo ready to go home after that, but no c-section. If you are already that effaced, I don't think induction will really increase your risk of a c-section that much.  You are at a much better starting point than I was.

Semen contains prostaglandins which can trigger labor. This is why having sex can trigger labor. However, the oral cavity (your mouth) has more prostaglandin receptors than your vagina. Soooo.... Get to swishing.
  • I tried all the tricks-walking, yoga balls...but was still induced at 42 weeks.  I did have a successful vaginal birth though.
