Anyone else suffering through first-tri and a crappy job? (VENT)

Sorry to be negative, but just looking for some support! I'd already been looking for new jobs when I found out earlier this week that I'm pregnant! I'm delighted, but really having a bad time at work. My plan is to continue working for the $$ and health insurance until right a month or so before the due date and resign, since I want to change careers anyway, and, provided my husband keeps his job and I don't have to dip into savings prior to the due date, we should be just fine financially for 4-6 months.
As it is, I work 50-60 hours on the regular, and my department has been severely understaffed since I got there. Luckily I've been fairly comfortable with the naseau since I can work from home most mornings, but on my worse days, like today, I have to leave "early" at 5:30 to go lay down. Because I'm in middle management, there's a bunch of pressure for me to keep up with daily demands, and my supervisors will probably find an excuse to fire me if and when they ever hire enough people so that they don't desperately need me. We have some major differences of opinion in the operation of the business.
I'm trying to delegate, but with the staffing shortage, I understand that no one has much bandwidth to take on extra work. I really hate this job and am only in it for the money and insurance at this point. Would leaving while pregnant be a totally crazy thing to do? Is it worth it to suffer through purely for financial reasons?  Should I tell just one person on my team, so that they can help deflect criticism for not working as hard as is expected, meaning way over 40 hours a week?
PS: I should clarify that my job stress is only mental, nothing to do with physical exertion or chemicals or anything (women in those situations have much more cause to complain than I do!).

  • Wow this seems horrible... You work under stress and way to many hours. This week I am sooo tired, and I only work 40 hours a week... What think that I've learn is that nothing is worth your well being and happiness, if you are gonna be miserable doing your job you should fine something else.

I'm in a similar situation. I hate my job, and was hoping to find another before I found out I was pregnant. Now, I feel totally stuck. I plan to stay until August or so, then quit. I can't imagine being there through the end of the summer, but quitting now seems foolish. I'm beginning to look for temporary positions (for example, filling in for women on maternity leave), but haven't had much luck finding openings like that so far. I'm lucky to have my own insurance, instead of the company plan; my company LOVES to fire people, and I have been fantasizing about quitting since I started working there, so I never thought it was a good idea to depend on them for insurance. I plan to keep my pregnancy a secret for as long as possible, probably mostly out of spite. However, since you're worried about being fired, it might be a good idea to tell them you're pregnant soon. There are employment laws that protect pregnant women, so even if they want to fire you they will probably keep you around out of fear of a lawsuit. I don't know enough about the laws yet to say whether or not that's definitely good advice, but it's worth looking into. Your work might become a little more bearable if you have a sense of security. I want to say, "it's not worth it, quit right now," to you but I can't even do that myself! The smartest thing to do is to stick it out and make that money.
  • Same here! I love work as a nurse and we are so understaffed I end up doing 2 people's jobs everyday I'm there. It's so physically demanding having to lift patients and on your feet 12 hours a day. I wanted to leave before I found out I'm pregnant but now I'm staying because I've never cashed in any pto and I have short term disability insurance there. I'm exhausted all the time now and everyday is a struggle to make it through a whole shift but I'm keeping my mouth shut so I can save for when I have baby.
  • I'm assuming all of you guys are in the USA? Because in Canada we do have the CSST that make sure you are apt to do your job and if you can't, like to dangerous or demanding your employer needs to give you something simpler or you are out and still paid.
  • We actually just had a supreme court case here where a woman who delivered packages asked to only do light duty (no packages more than 20 pounds) while she was pregnant under her doctor's advice), but the company put her on unpaid leave instead! Not sure they've made a decision there yet, hopefully it's the right one1
  • Thanks mommas, I'm sad there's more than a couple of us in the same situation, but you can always vent to me, I understand! I'll be getting on my husband's insurance during his next open enrollment, which will take effect in July. Hopefully I can make it til at least then, if not September, which is my original plan
