2nd Trimester

is it normal or ohk to take milk of magnesia daily?

I have to take milk of magnesia every day to every other day and I have to take 30 ml to 60 ml every time I take it in order for it to help. If I don't take that much that often it won't help. Just a little of it doesn't do anything. If I don't take it at all I won't be able to go for up to weeks and when I do it's pain and hard to go. Should I have to take it that often and that much? I've been doing this for about two and a half weeks now. Is it safe to take it that much and often for this long? I've always had problems with having constipation for years that I can remember. I just don't want to over-do the milk of magnesia.

  • From what I've read, laxatives like milk of magnesia should be used as a last resort in pregnancy, and not for long durations if you can help it. Your intestines can become dependent on them to go. What else have you tried?

And yes, this is probably something you should have asked your doctor before you started taking it every day.

  • Definitely consult your doctor. I've had constipation issues since being pregnant. The biggest thing I do for it is take Metamucil daily. I've taken milk of magnesia once at 4tbsp (a full dose) and once at 1tbsp (1/4 dose). What you're listing seems a little excessive, you might want to make sure there are no other underlying issues, especially if this has been going on since before you got pregnant.

  • I believe this is your THIRD post about your constipation. Clearly, you need to speak to your Doctor regarding this issue. Ask them what you can take daily. We are internet strangers that know nothing about your medical history and most of us do not have medical degrees.

That being said, constipation is a very common problem in pregnancy. Many of us experience it throughout. Your doctor is the best one to guide you on how to handle it.

  • My doctor recommended me taking it, and said to "stay on top of it" but didn't say how much, for how long, or anything else I could try.

Once again, great questions for your doctor.
  • Definitely talk.to your doctor..Im taking a fiber supplement, probiotic, and stool softener daily. If I get somewhat regular for a few days I will cut out the stool softener. Only when it's been a long time or I'm in alot of pain or nauseous from constipation will in take a single dose of miralax--drs really err on not using laxatives during pregnancy. But talk to your doctor, unless you tell them exactly what you are doing or tried and what is going on they cannot givd you advice to help you
  • I asked my Dr about dosing of all the meds on the OK list and he said the doses are the same for pregnant women. Of course with any laxative you can become dependent on it. GL
