3D Ultrasounds

I'm going to have a 3D ultrasound tomorrow and I have never done one before. Excited because this will be the first time I get to find out the gender of my baby. With my other 2 kids we didn't find out because my husband is against it. He thinks I'm going to ruin the surprise, so he's not coming with me to find out. LOL. He wants me to keep the gender to myself and not tell anyone. So it'll be my little secret for the next 17 weeks or so.

Any advice on 3D ultrasounds? =)

What advice is there to give for a 3D ultrasound.... You go and get to see your baby a little more detailed . That's it
  • Loading the player...
  • You will see an alien Lol it's funny looking. They are cool though .I went at 13 wks.. And going back at 30 wks just to check up on her
  • I also saw a glimpse of mine at 16 weeks but I plan on going when I'm around 30 weeks or so to get an even better insight! :)
  • There's no difference between 3d and a regular u/s. at my 11wk and anatomy scan they did flip it to 3d to try to get a better look at something. It's not done differently, just looks different.

  • Only difference is you have to pay out of pocket for the 3D where as the regular ones insurance will cover the cost.

Somewhat. I usually end up shelling out about $100 per ultrasound, and they're regular ones.My insurance only seems to be covering about 2/3rds of ultrasounds. Bleck.  I'd hate to see what a 3D one would run me. I fully intend on telling them to stay away from that button on the machine! Isn't that silly? A whole lot more money for them just to press a button on a machine they are already using.

  • I had my regular u/s already and the pictures weren't very clear. My doctor couldn't see what the gender was, and to do a 2nd u/s I would have to pay out of pocket anyways. Figured I would go for the 3D because I've heard it's clearer and basically runs the same price for me as an uncovered u/s.

EWW that sucks... There are places here that you can go to just for the 3d/4d ultrasounds and they typically run anywhere from $75-100.  Though if the Ultrasound tech does not ask you if you want the 3d/4d image and they just give it to you, then you shouldnt have to pay.. At my 20 week A/S scan she gave us 3d/4D pictures and told us we wouldnt have to pay anything extra for them,

@Foster1990- Are you sure the ultrasound tech was telling you the truth?? was the image blurry or was the baby just not corporating... our LO didn't want to move out of a ball at first, but then the tech finally got her to move...

  • That's pretty cool on the pictures, @dkleid! And yeah, my insurance isn't the greatest. It's certainly better than none at all, though! I also started an HSA last year because I know my insurance is kind of crappy. So at least I'm not paying out of my bank account, it's money already set aside.

  • Here's my advice. If you want to know the sex of your child, ask about the sex of your child, not the gender. Gender is self identifying as male or female and has nothing to do with the anatomy someone was born with. The only person who can tell you the gender of your child, is your child.

and #sorrynotsorry to all you gender/sex nondiscriminators out there. There is a difference, and it is important. And it's important to educate and use the correct terminology.
I've never heard that before.. sorry if I offended you or anyone else. Thank you for letting me know.
  • So my hospital tries to take a 3d picture or two with all my ultrasounds (I also have had a bunch - not charged for them, since it's hospital practice)

Honestly the baby looks like an alien and if they are moving, the pics will be blurry! Good luck!

  • Had my 3D u/s this morning btw and we are having a boy =) Glad I decided to have it done because my 4 yr old was able to see her new brother and see his face more than she saw on the 2D one.
  • May I ask how far along you are? I was actually looking into them today but not sure when is the best time to go :)

If you want it to "look" like a baby go is between 28 -32 weeks.. It looks like a baby and still has room to see the face. After that you run out of room and the baby can be smashed up against the side, no full face shot.
  • I had 3d scan done for my first 2 kids amazing experience the picture of my son looks so like him and it's lovely to show the kids when they get older I would recommend drinking a lot of water in the days leading up to the scan as this makes your pictures more clear enjoy your scan

  • When I went for my 20 week ultrasound after telling me the gender she did one 3d of her face I didn't pay anything out of pocket

I actually have to say you were correct on this one it is called a gender scan even though you are finding out the sex so you're both correct look at the website of an elective place and they definitely refer to it as a gender determination scan

    ....... Quote fail

I never get into the sex vs gender convo's but I will say, the nurses & my OB says gender, and I have lots of nurse friends who say gender as well. I just had a doctor at my girls' dance studio last week ask if I knew the "gender" of the baby. Ha. Obviously they know the correct definition for each, but just choose to say gender instead of sex.

  • Just saw a news story about how the FDA is recommending against the use if them for pictures and keepsakes... Unnecessary radiation without medical benefit when used for this purpose... Sorry I know the thread is a little old but didn't want to start a new thread... Thought others might have seen this new information as well... It's in line with what I always personally felt about them.

I saw the same news story the other night. It was interesting.
