Doppler System? Worth the purchase?

My husband and I are expecting our first baby in June! Being anxious we were researching the doppler systems, we found some with really good reviews and are not super expensive. Any insight from you ladies?

Re: Doppler System? Worth the purchase?

  • Our friends loaned one to us and we use it about once a week to listen to the heartbeat. I think it's by Stork Radio. We like comparing where on my belly we hear the heartbeat from week to week. We use it just for fun. But I wouldn't have bought one if they hadn't loaned it to us. I would say that if you are the type to get freaked out one day when you can't find the heartbeat I wouldn't get one...it will just make you worried and you'll be calling the doctor to find out what's wrong.

Ive suffered mulptle losses, the Doppler has really helped me in between doctors appointments, I didn't obsess and listen everyday, just a few times a week. It really put my mind at ease. Now I'm heading into my third tri, his little kicks reasure me everyday. So I've used it less and less. Once you are over 12 weeks, it really does become easier to find the heartbeat, plus you get used to the different sounds. I would suggest watching a few utube videos in the beginning.
I paid $40 for mine, and it was money well spent.
  • Yeah my husband researched a bunch and we found one for $40 that has great reviews! Thanks for your feedback :)

    Congrats on your bundle!
  • I used mine for a bit, but once I started feeling her I haven't used it at all.
  • This time, I got the Sonoline B online for around $40.  Youtube videos explain the different sounds (your heartbeat, your GI, placenta, baby).  I liked the extra reassurance early on prior to feeling fetal movement.

I couldn't agree more! Our first pregnancy was a loss and I've been so worried that we will lose this one too. We borrow our doppler from a friend (I'm sorry I can remember the name of it) and listen to our little one once or twice a week! It is super reassuring and greatly helps to calm our nerves until baby starts to kick. =)

  • Its wonderful until you start feeling your LO move about. I bought one at the 11 weeks mark and used it almost daily until about 16-17 weeks along when I began to feel some jabbing! It's well worth the buy! I've gone through a miscarriage and I'm sure at some point Ill use it again just to ease my mind! Well wishes and hugs to you! <3
  • My wife had a friend that let us borrow one. There have been a few times that she's gotten very sick and hasn't been able to hold food down for 12+ hours.  It's very nice to have just for the peace of mind to know that you can still hear the heart beat and nothing's wrong with the baby.

For the record, this is our first child, and we were trying to conceive for 3 years before she finally became pregnant, so we're both a little nervous about everything turning out ok.

  • My SIL offered me hers. I've used it twice - only because my DS wanted to hear the baby. I, personally would never buy one. She said she was using it about 10x a week. Maybe it's because it's my second, but I don't the point of it. Plus, for me at least, I have an anterior placenta so it hard for my doc to find LOs heartbeat, let alone me trying to figure it out. But, that's just personal preference.
  • I picked one up off Craigslist for $30. I use it every couple of days, just for peace of mind. If you are the type to freak out if you can't find the heartbeat, I would not recommend getting it. When I first bought it I went into it knowing I may not be able to find the HB and that it wouldn't mean anything. It took me about ten minutes but I did find it. Now it only takes me a minute or two. I listen for a few seconds, sometimes I calculate heart rate, and then I put it away.

I imagine I will be using it much less, if at all, once I start feeling baby move.

  • If you're already in the second trimester I wouldn't bother. You'll start to feel baby move soon enough.
  • @KendrakayeT‌ thanks for the link I did go and look it up. We dont use it a lot my hubby just like listening every once in awhile, im 18 weeks and havent really felt anything once I start feeling we probably wont use it!
  • We rent ours from baby beats for like 30 bucks a month. Such a lovely sound :)
  • You can buy a heart to heart one for 20 or 30 dollars at Babies R Us... but be warned you can't hear it until 28 weeks. I rushed to buy one and can't use it for another 3 weeks.
  • Just so you know, a real doppler, like at your Dr's office runs for about $300-400.  The one's you are buying in a store is not a doppler, just a little microphone.  If you don't hear the heartbeat, it's because it's not strong/loud enough to be detected by the microphone.  It could cause unnecessary worry.

  • Yes! I got the Sonoline B for free from someone on a yard sale site. There is a short in the cord so you have to hold it a certain way. Its amazing to be able to wake up and hear my misters heartbeat!
  • I would really love to get one to reassure myself everything is fine between appointments, but have resisted because the FDA discourages their use except by trained medical professionals.

  • I wouldn't use one more than once a week if that. It is emitting radiation, as it's an ultrasound device and the effects on baby aren't totally known. My sister used the sonoline b. She is sending it to me, but I might try to use a fetal stethoscope instead
  • Im a nurse so when im at work a few of us will get together to listen on break. Its just a good feeling to hear it every once in a while, but I wouldnt buy one. I cant wait to actually feel baby move! 14 weeks tomorrow :)

It's soundwaves, it is not emitting radiation.
