2nd Trimester

Flagyl and pregnancy

Hey guys. I posted earlier about transitional BV with lots of views but no replies. My dr perscribed flagyl to treat since this is the second time the swab came up with that result.

Is it safe to take ? I know my doctor wouldn't perscribe it if I didn't need it but im worried it might hurt the baby. Anyone else take this medication and everything was alright ?

Please reply. I'm really nervous. My son has already been diagnosed with a minor birth defect and I just don't want to subject him to anything else.

Re: Flagyl and pregnancy

  • Talk to your pharmacist. I would assume its safe if your doctor prescribed it, but if your still worried a second opinion from a professional never hurt.  By the way I work in a pharmacy and we get questions like this all the time so don't hesitate to ask either. It's pretty normal.

The pharmacist said the benefits outweigh the risks. It's becuase I'm only in the transitional phase that makes me nervous about be treat d at all . thanks for your reply :) Hoping there are some other women out there that have taken it that can offer some insight :)
  • First off flagyl is an anti-fungal and is only used to treat yeast infections. I had BV and had to take two rounds of antibiotics for it to clear up. Also took two flagyl pills spaced 3 days a part for yeast infection after use of antibiotics. Your ob wouldn't prescribe you something that's harmful. Mine was the 150 mg dose.

    Thanks for your reply.
I have looked it up and I'm on the right meds. My dose is 500mg twice a day for a week.
Pretty positive I've read that it can actually cause a yeast infection rather than cure one .

I'm still nervous to take it but I know treating the infection is important. It's just scary to put something in your body that the baby is going to get as well
  • That's what I took and I took one dose and then the following week my OB prescribed it again. I was on 500 mg for 7 days both times. That was something that started with an m. Then the flagyl after that. It gets rid of all bacteria. Good and bad. I recommend eating a lot of yogurt, kefir milk or a probiotic. Always talk to ob before starting anything though. It was scary to take but oh so happy to have my lady parts back to normal Haha

Yes, it's called metronidazole ! I used the term flagyl, bc I think that's what they call it in the states. Oh trust me, I'm eating all the yogurt I can get my hands on so I can be done with this . It's hard knowing what the right thing to do when taking meds during pregnancy, especially when the baby already has an issue ( during 20 week US it was discovered there is a high suspicion for cleft lip and palate ) and when I don't have full blown BV. My doc decided to treat bc my swabs take. 7 weeks apart showed a transition to BV. How far along were you when you took it?
  • Flagyl is most certainly not an anti fungal. It is a broad spectrum antibiotic given for a number of infections, including bv (bacterial vaginosis). It is safe in pregnancy and the #1 prescribed medication for bv. Antifungals are used for yeast infections.
  • Diflucan is an anti fungal that is given for yeast infections and is also safe, especially when taken in a single 150mg dose

I was 13 weeks and 15 weeks when I took the antibiotics. Almost 16 weeks when I did two seperate doses of the diflucan 150 mg dose.
  • Thanks! I've been taking the meds! Two doses left. Hopefully it's the last medication I have to take for the pregnancy!
  • I had BV and was given flagyl at 6 weeks pregnant. The benefits far outweigh the risk! BV has been linked to miscarriage, rupture of membranes, premature birth and low birth rate. Also mine was pretty bad, a lot of discharge and awful smell. I know the internet will scare you as I was scared as well but my Dr. is awesome and very down to earth, she would never jeopardize her career and give her patients something that wasn't safe. Anyways just had my 11 week sono and the baby is looking just perfect!
