Breastfeeding

how often are you feeding your 1-2 month old?

just curious - my 5 week-old has been eating every 3 hours during the day, occasionally going longer. her duration of feeding is also getting shorter. she used to do 10-15 min on each side, but now she is sometimes only doing one. i was feeding her closer to every two hours, but she started spitting up a lot, plus she's been sleeping longer at night so i figured she doesn't need it as often. she does often cluster feed somewhere between 6-8pm, which is maybe what leads to her long nighttime stretch. thanks!

  • If she is sleeping longer at night she still needs to eat more often during the day. She needs to take in the same number of oz's a day.

  • My son is almost 8 weeks. He eats about every 2 hours during the day. At night he will sleep for one 4-5 hour stretch and then starts eating every 2 hours in the early morning. He has colic that usually starts around 4:30-5pm and lasts for 3-4 hours and he cluster feeds at that time as well.

He also will only accept one breast during a feeding and eats for anywhere from 10-25 minutes at a time.
  • Most babies will be fine as long as you fee on demand. As long as baby has a minimum of 5-6 wet diapers and 1 stool per day (more is common, too, but many babies regulate between 4-6 weeks), you should be OK by following baby's lead. You can also request a weight check at the pediatrician's office or with an IBCLC.
