Did everyone take a birthing class?

This is my first baby and my husband and k were wondering do we have to taking a birthing class? All the older ladies say " you don't need it" and other moms say you won't use it and new moms say " yes, take it"

Any advice?

Re: Did everyone take a birthing class?

  • I took 3 different ones with my first. I am glad I did! I do not plan to take any this time.

    -Birthing
    -Breastfeeding
    -Newborn care

  • I did not take any classes with my first and I was fine
  • We took one and I'm so glad we did. I'm a nurse practitioner and DH is a physician who has delivered lots of babies, and we still found it so helpful and informative.
  • DH and I are going to our first class tonight. We figured it can't hurt, and it's covered by insurance so we won't be out any $$ if it sucks.
  • I suggest it for the first. You only need to take it once in your life. Whether you believe in the breathing techniques or not. There was a lot of helpful information.
  • I took the baby care class and loved it. We are signed up for the birthing class as well. It is our first child, so we wanted to feel as prepared as possible.
  • I've heard mixed things about classes as well, though most people seem to say that they weren't worth taking overall but were at least a little interesting.

I'm taking a pregnancy 'phisio/excercise' class and a breastfeeding class because they address my current concerns/ issues. I'd probably go for at least one class either way, might settle the nerves down a bit!

  • I am a FTM and we are scheduled for all the classes offered.

    Lamaze
    Breastfeeding
    Infant CPR
    Baby care

We want to be as prepared as possible and I think the classes will reduce my stress level.

  • I'm a FTM too and haven't signed up for any classes at all. I feel like I'm slacking but work schedules for myself and DH are so out of whack
  • With DD I took the breastfeeding class and the infant care class.  I already have infant CPR.

Infant CPR really is a good class to take and I'd advise everyone to consider it.  In my area the average response of an ambulance to a house in my county is 6 minutes.  And I can tell you, 6 minutes feels like forever when your kid is choking.  Take the class.  Infants put everything in their mouths.

  • I didn't take a birthing class, my nurses coached me through the delivery anyway.

We did take infant CPR and 2 different newborn care classes. But we had to in order to take our DS home because he was in the NICU.
  • We just started ours on Saturday. I just wanted to go into it as prepared as possible. I don't think it's a MUST, but I certainly don't think it's a waste of time.
  • With my first I took no classes. If I had to do it all over again. I would definitely have taken a breastfeeding class but that's the only one. I have had numerous CPR classes due to my job. I had awesome nurses for the delivery and they helped me through it.
  • I took the birthing class. It would have been imforative if I had all natural, but I had an epidural. Everything they taught I did not use. But I prob would have been happy I took it if the pain meds did not do their job.
  • I took a "Prepared Child Birth" class at the hospital when I had my daughter. I have not and will not be taking one with this one. It helped to learn what the actual birth process was at the hospital I was delievering at.

  • We took a birth class about a month ago. I liked it. It was nice to hear about possible procedures and exactly what happens at the hospital when you arrive. We are also taking a baby care class, mostly for DH because he's nervous about taking care of baby.

  • This is my first baby as well and I'll be starting the "Bradley Method" birthing class this Thursday. I'm really excited and especially want my husband to be more knowledgeable about the whole process.
  • With my DD DH and I took a Lamaze and infant care class. I would recommend these for FTMs.

For those that posted on the thread about Dads that seemed distant or disconnected this is a great way to get your man involved with baby. I feel like a lot of men seem distant because they don't have opinions on what to register for or how the nursery should look. When it comes to how they can help out with the birth or baby they might be more engaged. I know that was the case for me at least.
  • I'm a FTM, I've decided not to take any classes I feel like they just gonna make nervous and give me anxiety lol I did take an advanced child care/ first aid/CPR/AED training but only because i had too for work.
  • What is DH? Thks

Dear husband... There are a lot of acronyms on here. If you google Bump acronyms you can find out what they are.
  • I haven't taken a class but read a few books. I plan on possibly taking a breastfeeding class, but my work schedule is weird and most of the classes are offered while I'm working so I may just read up on the subject.

  • With my first I took a 6 week course that incorporated everything from birthing to baby care to infant CPR. I took a small refresher class last week since my youngest is almost 6 and there are quite a few things that have changed. I would like to take a CPR refresher also just to be on top of things. I definitely think classes help out first time moms.
  • This is our first child and we are going to be attending a birthing class (includes a hospital tour) and a breastfeeding class. The birthing class is going to go over what all to expect, and I think it will be go a long ways to help us not panic when the time comes. That one is $40. The breastfeeding class is free, I plan on breastfeeding (hopefully that plan pans out) and I've read that it helps to have husbands go along, too, so they understand what's going on.

So, if you like planning and being prepared, and the classes are inexpensive and at convenient times for both of you, you might as well go.

  • My husband and I took a breastfeeding class and a birthing class. Both lasted one day and I am happy we did. My husband got a ton of good tips for supporting me during this process.
  • I'm a FTM and my husband and I are taking Babycare and Infant CPR. We read bad reviews about the birthing class that was being offered at our hospital so we decided to skip it.
  • Me and my spouse are in one now first baby
  • I finished the Bradley Method 10 week class series. My teacher was awesome, other couples asked good questions. My fears have been faced and I'm ready to get this show on the road
  • We just finished Hypnobirthing. Was unbelieeeevably helpful for us in understanding the "natural" version of things that we're wanting as well as having a detailed birth plan in place for the unexpected induction, epidural or Csection that we understand all the medical speak.

Also included breast feeding (and why I'm going to slap any nurse that rushes that process!) and parenting basics like diaper changing.

Well worth the time and $$ to go into this atleast with the feeling of being relaxed and ready.
