2nd Trimester

Anyone else naming their baby something that has multiple nickname possibilities?

My DH and I are naming our baby Genevieve Deanna.  Genevieve is a family name and I love the idea of having a little Eve!  BUT, I am not crazy about the idea of people calling her Genny or Genna or something like that.

I know there is nothing I can do about it, just something trivial I am preparing myself for.

Anyone else have a name like this where they love one nickname and could do without others?  Just wondering Smile

  • Genevieve is adorable and I love "Eve", too.

I just want to avoid ALL nicknames, no matter what the name (for my babe, that is).  We like Isabelle, but want nothing to do with Izzy.

  • I had a friend named Genevieve growing up.  And no one called her anything but Genevieve.  I think it's all on how you present the name and whether you or other family members call her one of the short forms.  If you make it clear that it's either Genevieve or Eve when she's little I don't think you'll have a problem.
  • Ditto PP.  Parents usually are the ones that will determine if a nickname is going to be used and what the nickname will be.

But I just gotta say that I am absolutely in love with the name you've chosen and I'm so jealous of you.  My husband only likes boring names and we are having a miserable time trying to find one we both like.

  • I had a Genevieve in my class.  We called her Gennie.

  • I think that people won't call her something you or she doesn't want to be called. My mom's name is Jennifer and didn't ever allow anyone to call her Jen or Jenny. So it's a non-issue. My nephew's name is Anthony, and no one is allowed or ever called him Tony.

We like Wesley being called "Wes," so that works for us. But I don't think it will be an issue for you at all. :)

You'll find something great to agree on.  My DH was all for traditional names too and actually Genevieve is very old fashioned, but I love it!  Deanna is my best friends name and I have always loved it!

  • Our daughter's name is Eleanor.  My cousin's daughter is Ella so we are avoiding Ella or Ellie and will call her Nora instead (we think).  There are a bunch of nicknames that fit, but we are also aware that when she gets older she might decide to call herself something different which is fine too.

  • Genevieve is beautiful.  I used to work with a Genevieve and she was called by a million nicknames (Gen, Genny, Genna, but never Eve or Evie).  It's hard to decide what people will call her, unless she is opinionated about it.

  • We are using Alexander. He can go by Alex, Xander, Alexander, AJ (middle name starts with J), Alexi, or Lex (as in Luther). Dh and I will probably just call him Xander or Alexander.
  • You can try to avoid nicknames, but wait until your daugther comes to you one day and wants to be called something completely different ;) I totally did that to my parents one summer, wanting to be called Henrietta from Mister Rogers. My co-worker's son is Jack and he came home from school wanting to be called John.
