Wow, that's a really tough situation! I don't want to tell you to quit your job because that's a decision that only you can make, but I will say that staying with it leaves you - and your baby - open to a lot of risk, especially since there's been a confirmed outbreak in your town. Then again, since you never know who hasn't been vaccinated and/or may be contagious, just going out in public is probably risky for you right now, and short of quarantining yourself, there doesn't seem to be much you can do about that. You're definitely not being dramatic or worrying without reason.
I am also not immune dispite having gotten the immunization as a child. HOWEVER, It is just Rubella that didn't stick for me. The rest did. I would call your doctor back to confirm that NO PART of the shot stuck. I'm hoping for your sake that it was only one part and that the measles part did take.
*I was really worried too, but I referred back to my notes after my nurse MIL questioned if it was the full shot that didn't stick or just part.
I was wondering how many of us think we are immune when we really aren't... That is such a scary thought.... I don't think it's fair for you to quit your job.... Maybe you can take a medical leave? Some kind of short or long term disability?
I am in Fairfax too! I knew there were cases in DC but had not heard of Fairfax. Measles does care me but I can't stop working or going out in public ( I don't work with kids but I take the bus and metro) Who knows what I am exposed to but I can't quarantine myself. Its a tough spot you are in. I wouldn't quit my job just yet. I would talk to your boss and see if he/she might have suggestions. Sorry you have to go through this. I hope you can find some solution.
Ok so I was just goggling the local news and the case is still under investigation. Test are being run and will take 24hrs. The county resident is in quarantine at home and they are working to determine other exposure sites. Hopefully they can get more answers to us soon. On another note the story states Fairfax County has one of the lowest vaccination rates in VA. WTF!
We're also in NoVa... I'm definitely rattled. I'm less concerned about myself than I am of bringing a defenseless baby into the world that could contract something. My oldest starts Kindergarten this year so I imagine our exposure risk will go up exponentially.
Oh man. I'm also in FFX Co. I am worried about it but like others have said, mostly worried about my unvaccinated baby when she gets here. I plan to talk to my pedi about it at DD1's upcoming 2-yr well visit. DH and I were vaccinated when we were younger but idk about our immunity status now.
Measles while pregnant is super dangerous for your baby.
Listen to your doctor!
If you can't quit, take a leave. Your doctor can write a note.
It's not something to risk.
For some people the vaccine doesn't give them immunity, which is why people need to vaccinate... to protect those who can't have them or those that it doesn't work for.
Taking a leave does not guarantee anything....and we have no understanding of her financial situation to know that is even an option. It does sound like something to look into to make an informed and practical decision.
I am a sign language interpreter in the school system in Frederick MD not to far from you. I don't have any advice either way but I totally understand where you are coming from! Interpreters have such a hard time finding full time benefited work, walking away would not be an easy decision. Hope you are able to find a solution that works well for your health, family and career. It is a hard thing to balance!
You can get the booster only after your deliver. I think your doctor is being extreme. As an l and d nurse we have tons of women who are not rubella immune and none of them quit working?!? That sounds insane. No!
I don't think that would be approved under FMLA for a leave of absence. Just being at risk would not meet the criteria for a serious health condition. Pregnancy obviously does but there would need to be a complication that supported disability. Unless there's a non-FMLA leave they could offer you. That said, I kind of feel like previous posters in that it doesn't really guarantee that you wouldn't be exposed.
Re: Anyone worried about measles?
Whatever you decide to do, best of luck!

Yikes. Tough call for sure
How did you find out that your vax didn't stick?
