2nd Trimester

20 weeks - Short Nasal Bone & Bright Bowel

Last Saturday I had my 20 week scan at the fetal specialist (I have the factor 5 leiden) and they were doing some measurements. They noticed 2 things that caught their attention. First thing - the dr. said that my baby girl's nasal bone grew but very little since my last appointment. She also told me that she had a bright bowel. Both of these are soft markers for down's (the bright bowel also a soft marker for cystic fibrosis) As you can imagine I have been very very worried about the health of the baby. It just scares me - and I can't stop crying. Ofcourse I love my baby girl more than anything and she be wonderful no matter what. I am just so worried for her health. I went and got a "Harmony" test but I have to wait two whole weeks for the results of that. Friday I am going to give more blood work for cystic fibrosis testing. Has anyone had a similar experience to this and everything ended up fine?? I had the first trimester screening and all that blood work came back saying that I was low risk, so other than the short nasal bone and the bright bowel everything else looked normal.

On a side note - could the fact that I have factor 5 leiden be causing any of this you think?? Maybe affecting the bone growth??

Thanks for listening - I am just really scared and looking for advice and support.

First time pregnancy :)

I did not have that happen, but did have a genetic screening blood test come back with an elevated risk for Down's due to a high HCG level.  I had the Verifi blood screen (similar to Harmony) and everything came back perfectly normal.  I know this is different than your situation, just wanted to share in case it provided any help at all.  Wishing you and your  baby girl all the best in the world.
  • @amyjay23‌ I just got my harmony test back and it came back low risk (1 in 10,000 odds) so it has definitely made me feel better. Now I am waiting back on my cystic fibrosis blood test to see if I am a carrier. I hate this waiting game. I sure hope everything's okay...
  • At our 19 week appointment we were advised our baby had the bright bowel. We just went Tues for 2nd level ultrasound. Nothing new was found but we're advised due to my age (34) and the bright bowel that we are 1 in 57 for a down syndrome baby. We opted for harmony and additional blood tests to see if I'm a carrier for cystic fibrosis and for potential viruses. I can totally relate to the fear and sadness you feel. The unknown is the hardest part. This is why I didn't do the 1st trimester screening. I have had many friends who had similar situations with bright bowel that resulted in perfectly healthy babies.
