Evening primrose oil

Has anyone used it in the past to soften the cervix? Did it work?
I've been induced with my two previous pregnancies and I'd like to try and avoid that this time if at all possible.

Re: Evening primrose oil

  • Two of my cousins starting using primrose oil in a capsule and would poke a hole in it with a pin and insert as close to cervix as possible before bed. Both swear by it and each have had two kids with no tearing. (I think they started this around 36 weeks I want to say... Could be wrong on that, but I know it was later in third tri).

I've never heard of it...what does your OB say?

edited because my first response came off really b*tchy.
  • My OB last pregnancy had me use it.  She had a specific dosage schedule for me starting at 35 weeks.  I was induced at 39 weeks and when they started I was 2cm dialated.  I don't have any experience without it, but I definitely had an easier induction than my sister who didn't use it.

I don't know if she will have me on it again this pregnancy or not.

  • I 100% believe in it! I did tear with my first however i think that the oil and the raspberry leaf tea I drank helped me have a fast delivery. (1.5 from start to finish--it was amazing!). Now I just am worried if I do it again how fast this delivery may go. I took it by mouth also and started at 34 weeks
  • Worth a shot!
  • I used it with my daughter and it didn't really seem to help but I started using it kind of late. Just remember, that anytime anything goes up into your lady parts the risk for infection goes up.
