LO just hit 3 wks

we had a dr appt yesterday for a follow up weight check, she is still just a few oz shy of her birth weight. Dr had expected her to gain more since our last visit. Anyone dr said to start pumping atleast 4x a day after I've nursed and feed what I pump in a bottle to try an get her extra calories...the other option was to supplement with formula which is a last resort for me. I had been really sick the past week and a half so dr thinks that could be reasoning behind her gaining less weight. Anyway, I just woke to feed my LO in the middle of the night, changed her diaper first to help wake her up and she ate some on one side and then fell asleep. I went ahead and pumped and got 4oz total. Any suggestions for getting baby to stay awake longer to eat? I forgot how difficult/frustrating breastfeeding could be!

  • We supplemented after most feedings with pumped breastmilk the first few weeks based on recommendations from a LC. Once she was consistently gaining we were able to stop. Those first few weeks were long, having to pump after most feedings, but it got easier.

As for keeping the baby awake I would switch sides every 5-7 minutes, burp often, use a wet washcloth if she fell asleep, and did diaper changes in the middle of feedings. But there were times she wouldn't stay awake. We gave her a bath sometimes to wake her and sometimes she slept through it. Good luck! I remember how frustrating those times were.
