To induce... or wait.

Back story: DD was induced at 39 wks due to her size. She was 8lb 12oz delivered vaginally and was 110% healthy but did have shoulder dystocia because of her size. Baby #2 is measuring large as well. My due date is 2/24. My doctor will be out of town 2/17-2/23 She said she can have someone induce me at 39 weeks or I can wait. I know a lot of you are against induction. I've heard it all. I just want to know what would you do. (Both options have risk of needing csection which I'm trying to avoid)

  • I said let nature take it's course but I'm 50/60 on it.

  • I also had a big first baby 9 Ib 8 ounces and also had shoulder dystocia. My second was also measuring large but was only 8Ib 15 ounces.
With my second I had a stretch and sweep at 38 and 39 weeks. I also took evening primrose oil and raspberry leaf tea. Has your OB suggested any of these methods prior to going directly to a medical induction? I also really didn't want a section so I tried every other method prior to that route. Perhaps it's worth trying alternative methods and getting medically induced at term if nothing works. The stretch and sweep was the solution for me (6 hours after the 39 week one I was in labour).

Good luck hope this baby is a bit smaller :)
  • I didn't vote.  This is a really though decision. :-( If your doc was going to be there, I'd say induce.  But I really want my doctor to deliver my baby if at all possible so I cant recommend that you use someone else b/c I wouldn't want to! As a matter of fact, I'm getting induced on the 18th and would probably try "home remedies to get him to come earlier prior to induction EXCECPT my doc is out of town this wknd! So although I'd rather labor start on its own I also don't want labor to start b/c that means my doc wont deliver my sweetie.

Oh well.  Good luck making your decision.

  • I was induced at 40 weeks with DD because my doctor was going out of town for 2 weeks. I was fully effaced and did my research. We wanted my doctor to be there so we chose to induce. This time my doctor is taking his first vacation since DD was born at my due date again! He is doing it to me again. I'm already 90% effaced at 38 weeks so my husband and I are going to chose to be induced again before he leaves unless baby comes before hand. This is sort of the opposite of your situation. I would want my doctor to be there that is why we chose what we did along with many other factors and research. I would wait until my doctor is there but I wanted to give you my story about inducing in case that helps. With DD it was quick because I already had a lot of progress on my own.

We did the sweep Monday and will do it again next Monday at 39 weeks. I'd love to do an alternative to medical induction :) I'll have to look into those methods.
