DIAPER BAGS FOR TODDLER & NEWBORN

Hi. I am looking for diaper bag options. I have a 2 yr old and I am expecting. The current diaper bag I am using is already jam packed and would never work for 2 kids. I need some help with what are some good options.

I really love Vera Bradley but their diaper bags also seem pretty small/ similar size to what I currently have.

Any suggestions?

Thanks :-)

  • I have a 2 year old and have started using a backpack that we already had.  It has lots of room, compartments and much more comfortable to carry around than a diaper bag.

I've got a 2 year old and 6 month old but didn't need a bigger diaper bag (and the one I have isn't that big). Pretty sure the only things in the bag for the 2 year old are a couple of diapers and a bib. Occasionally a toy and snacks for him make it in, but everything else is for the baby. What do I seem to be missing that is currently making yours so full?
  • Well I always have sippy cups, diapers, wipes, snacks and 1 extra set of clothes (just in case). so i dont see how i would fit bottles and more diapers, clothes in the same bag... never happen..

I love petunia pickle bottom diaper bags - the boxy backpack should fit enough things for both kids. They are expensive but pretty durable. Otherwise, like PP said, a regular back pack should work as well.

  • thanks i will check that out
  • I carry a backpack diaper bag and have two kids, 2 and 5 months old.  The key, in my opinion, is only carrying what you need.  I only have about 6 diapers in the bag (4 for the baby and 2 for the toddler) at any given time + wipes + 1 outfit change for the baby and 2 spit cloths.  In the car I have a regular cloth grocery bag with back-up clothing and more diapers.  So if we go through everything in the bag I can go out to the car and get what I need.  With the toddler I was carrying way too much stuff (i.e. a full day of diapers + multiple changes of clothes) and that is not feasible with two.  Now I just carry what I reasonably need for the period of time I'll be gone and put extras in the car.  Avoids having to tote around a larger bag plus two kids.
  • thanks for all your suggestions :-)
  • I have a Vera Bradley backpack bag that is almost too big right now but was fine with DD was a toddler and DS was a baby.  I'm planning to use it when this baby comes as well.  What I put in there really depends on where we are going but I sometimes have a bottled water we can all share and some snacks and extra clothes for DS since he's potty training and I still have plenty of room.
  • I breastfeed so I just need diapers for both girls, wipes and a sippy cup all of which I stick in my giant mom-purse for most excursions (shopping, going out to eat, etc).
  • I have an almost 3 year old and a 5 month old. I use a Jansport backpack that has 2 main compartments. I put the toddler's stuff in one and the baby's stuff in the other. It is easier to keep them separate so I don't have to dig through a big bag full of stuff.

The toddler's stuff - 2 diapers and full change of clothes (shirt, pants, underwear, socks). She is in the process of potty training but still needs diapers for her naps

Baby's stuff - 4 diapers, wipes, diaper cream, 2 changes of clothes (a sleeper, onesie, pants, socks, hat), nursing cover, burp cloth

Shared stuff that I keep in the small front pocket - hand sanitizer, baby lotion, chapstick, napkins and sometimes snacks like a pack of peanut butter crackers or a fruit pouch. I also use the front pocket for my cell phone and a small wallet I keep all my cards and money in. I don't use a purse.

It is a black backpack (so my husband can use it too without feeling too girly) and it really isn't that heavy or big, even though it sounds like it haha
  • I alternate b/w a backpack and a 7 am enfant bag. i love the latter b/c it's big and lightweight. it also fits under my stroller or over the handlebar. i just had the third and haven't gone out yet with all three, but can't imagine only using a purse. i need a change of clothes for the 3 yo and baby, bibs, diapers, wipes, desitin and occasionally cups/snacks.

  • My girls are 22months apart. I got the JuJuBe Be Prepared bag. I could fit plenty of diapers, wipes, toys, snacks, ext for both. I tend to overpack so I had to have a bag that could hold it all. We also lived in the boonies so outings were generally 4+ hours long.

  • I normally just throw a handful of diapers and wipes in my regular purse for DD. So the diaper bag for #2 will work just fine......

I think the backpack idea is a good one as some pps have mentioned. Then you could have a separate zipped compartment for each child so you aren't digging for each child's stuff....

  • I actually downsized after the second kid. I realized I just didn't need much and with no free hands having a big bag seemed like more work. I used one of those little kid Skip Hop backpacks and stuck my wallet, phone, and keys in the front. Now I just throw a couple diapers and small pack of wipes in my purse.

  • I carry a thirty one Cindy tote. It's big, and I use it as a purse/ 2 yo diaper bag. It doesn't have but one compartment and 2 bottle holders/side pockets. I'm wondering if it will be enough for her and the nb though. I might do the backpack thing. I really like that idea of having seperate compartments for each child.
  • I have a 2 year old and have started using a backpack that we already had.  It has lots of room, compartments and much more comfortable to carry around than a diaper bag.

This is exactly what we do. We ditched the diaper bag once dd turned one and no longer cared to sit in the stroller anymore. Honestly now that we use the backpack I've started telling new moms what a waste a diaper bag really is

  • We also switched to a cheap backpack when DS arrived (DD was 17 months). Plenty of compartments and saves our hands for carrying two kids or chasing one while carrying the other.

  • I had a 26 month and 10 month triplets and use a vera. It's not the diaper bag, just a large one with. Few pockets...I prefer the one large space.
