Acne

I am 23 and 10w3d. I had minor acne as a teen like most people do. Since becoming pregnant it's terrible! I have started using proactiv again because that's what helped me when I was younger. But it's just bad. Anyone else having this issue, or have any tips that will help!?

Re: Acne

  • You might want to check if that's safe for the baby. There are a lot of chemicals in it and your skin is an organ - it absorbs chemicals into your body. There is a lot of new research out there about the effects of chemicals in acne and regular beauty products on baby development. I've also suffered from acne ever since I was younger and it is much worse now but I've switched to natural cleaners and using tea tree oil on the acne rather than chemical based products I was using before.

  • I too have had trouble with acne. I look like I did when I was 13! I posted about this last week and some suggested cinnamon and honey. They weren't exactly raving about results but it sounds like it smells good. One lady did say she stopped proactive because it wasn't safe! I was using murad and had to stop mine too!

  • I was using origins for acne but it included salisylic acid so doctor advised me to stop. I switched to origins white tea cleanser and moisturizer. It's helping but I still feel a hot mess. Haha definitely no pregnancy glowing skin here! On the plus side acne is my only symptom so I guess I shouldn't complain since I haven't experienced any nausea, tiredness, etc.
  • I have acne alllll down my back and shoulders and along my jaw. Hubby was giving me a back massage and I was cringing asking if he would turn out the lights so he couldn't see my backne....I feel like I'm 13 again...at least this time I know how to use make up!
  • I'm in the same boat, but I agree with @rwpass362‌. I would confirm with your doctor because putting on the proactiv. We tend to be overly reminded about all the things we shouldn't consume, but they forget to mention the things we shouldn't put on our skin or be exposed to while pregnant.
  • Good call, I'll check on the proactiv before I continue use. Only used a couple times, so hopefully it's okay.
  • Agree with the above...and also check out The Environmental Working Group's webpage (www.ewg.org) to see how toxic the products you are using are (I'm not trying to instill fear into everyone, just want you to know what resources are out there). I know all acne is different but my hormonal acne tends to do better with natural products (I use Burt's Bees Deep Cleaning cleanser and blemish stick). For what it's worth, my skin cleared up with #1 and with #2 in the 2nd trimester and I had flawless skin throughout the rest of my pregnancies - so hopefully you will also have that to look forward to!

  • I'm glad I saw this! I've been using Clinique oily skin face wash but the acne toner and moisturizer because I have very oily and acne prone skin. I never would have thought to ask my doctor about it, but I have an appointment on Monday for my 4 week followup and I'll be asking then. Thanks for posting your question!

  • I'm breaking out too. It's gross. I use bare minerals blemish powder. It's sulfur based so smells a little funky, but pregnancy safe & works well. Usually use burt bees blemish stick, but I think it has sasylic (sp?) acid. It's probably not enough to hurt anything, but I made the switch because I'm a little paranoid.

The BB blemish stick from their acne line does contain salicylic acid, but they make an all natural herbal stick too that has tea tree oil instead, just in case you were interested

Edit - @mdm173 you were right, It does contain some natural beta hydroxy acid. Thanks for the info your comment, it made me give it a second look!

  • Only my face is breaking out thankfully but it's still awful and I feel so gross. I stopped wearing makeup because I feel like it's only making it worse. My whole office knows now so I don't care as much. But I've been using the burts bees deep scrub also because it's the closest to my original face wash, at Ives apricot except without salicylic acid. I haven't tried the herbal stick but I want to.
  • I've also been breaking out.. My face, neck and chest. It's worse on my face though. Currently using Neutrogina cleanser. I go in two weeks for my follow up, planning to talk to her about this situation. I hate it. I never had problems like this as a teenager, I was so thankful for that, too.
  • So I did some research and will be testing out a product line! I went to Destination Maternity today and picked up Belli Brand acne face wash and spot treatment. It is designed for use by pregnant women. They also had a lot organic and para-bin free products from Juice and Honest Company. Worth a look if anyone hasn't been. I also picked up some organic mascara while I was out today, it is one of the few things I wear on my face daily, and I read regular mascara has some not so good ingredients!

  • I have terrible cystic acne. I talked to my dermatologist and my OB and I called a service called mother to baby. (Google it!) For my particular case, they determined that the benefits of using Proactiv outweigh the risk (spread of infection, having to take oral antibiotics.) I only use the wash which obviously doesn't stay on your face, and the benzoyl peroxide as a spot treatment. I'm not going to agonize over this because I'm doing everything else right and I recently had to get 4 cysts drained at my dermatologist. The acne is not just a spot here and there.
I'm not saying this means everyone can use Proactiv, but I'm sharing that in my particular case, I got the green light. And I have to say: it has helped enormously.
  • I'm going to try Dove soap and I'm checking my oil of olay moisturizer to see if i can still use it
  • After only a few days the belli brand stuff is helping. They are shrinking!
