I'm 39 weeks and 3 days. My cervix has been thinning for a couple weeks but nothing. I've done everything... spicy food...pineapple... eggplant parm... sex... relaxation... walking... you name it. My mucus plug won't go away. I'm in a lot of pain and my blood pressure shoots to 157... yesterday I was in the hospital to monitor it but it went down so let me go home. They said they will continue to monitor me every 3 days... I heard castor oil helps but read yahoo things and some say no its dangerous... or doesn't work if your mucus plug is still in place... any suggestions?? I'm a walking dying zombie here...

So, STAY AWAY FROM CASTOR OIL!
Sorry I know you heard a thousand others post the same loud NO. But I just had to say my peace.
Doctor or yahoo answers.
Yeah, really hard decision here.

Here's a summary - risks can be mainly dehydration and meconium in amniotic fluid IF YOU TAKE TOO MUCH. If you're smart about it, it can bring on contractions within 24 hrs for almost 60%.
I took 1.5Tbsp with orange juice in a big shot glass and 10 hrs went by with NO symptoms.. Nothin! So about 24 hrs later I took 2Tbsp and within 3 hours I vomited.. And then had a very loose bowel for two bowel movements but no uterine contractions (beyond what I was already experiencing). I had decided I wasn't willing to take a dose higher than 2Tbsp because that's when you start getting into more 'violent' symptoms and I just accepted baby wasn't ready, despite all the signs I was having.
Just to give you an idea of the signs I did have prior to taking castor oil - I was 60% effaced and over 1cm dialted.. just had my membranes sweeped by my OB 48hrs prior and within those 48hrs had lost my mucus plug with strong long contractions that would go on for a while then end and then start up again.. I thought baby may just need a little help but it's been a few days since and me and baby are fine and just waiting.
Hope this is helpful and helps you make an informed decision instead of just giving you my personal opinion
Look, I completely understand being uncomfortable and tired and having blood pressure issues and not wanting to be induced. I was just induced Wednesday due to developing preeclampsia. It was horrible. I wouldn't wish it on my worse enemy. All labors are different though, I just happened to get unlucky and have a really bad one. Give your body time. It knows what to do. You've made it it this far you can go farther. I know sometimes it doesn't seem like it but you can.
