medicines to help with constipation(kinda tmi)

I've had constipation for a pretty good while. I will be 17 weeks tomorrow and my doctor gave me a list of things I could take for it but was wondering which has worked best for stools that are "too big" feeling which make it hard to pass and very painful. I've tried the activia yogurt which helped with going but not very much as making it easy. All I drink is water, some times I may drink some milk or apple juice, but it's mainly water. Nothing seems to help and I am in so much need of relief from this. Thanks in advance.

  • Taking colace helped me out a lot when I've taken it regularly. Just don't miss a dose :). Also guzzling water has helped!

  • I took Miralax throughout my pregnancy (20 weeks and on). I had the same issue and it was bad. Miralax took a couple of days but it was great after. Double check with your doctor if it's safe for you.

  • I take miralax too.  I actually mix it in my morning hot chocolate a few days a week.

  • I just use prune juice. It makes me more regular, but I usually feel more bloated for a little while (which can feel just as bad).
  • I was desperate for relief because I hadn't used the bathroom in 2 weeks. I had tried everything I could think of, but nothing helped. I tried prune juice, eating more fiber, fiber pills, colace, and chowing down on green veggies. My stools too felt like they were just very hard and dry and unable to be passed because of the shape/size. I know its so gross and sorry for the description, but it seems like that is what is happening to you.

I did quite a bit of research and determined that I'd just go ahead and try to take some glycerin suppositories. I got the ones for children and tried that first. I was able to go, but you have to try to keep it in as long as you can. If you go right when you feel the urge all you'll pass is the suppository. It does need a little bit of time to melt inside of your body before it helps.

One time after that I had the same problem, but a lot worse and I was out of town, so no access to my childrens glycerin suppositories. My mom went to the store for me and bought the regular adult kind and after leaving it in for a while and taking a warm shower I was able to go. It did hurt, but afterwards I felt completely cleaned out which I hadn't felt my entire pregnancy.

Since that day I've not had to take anything for it and I've been pretty fortunate for that, but I'd recommend taking colace regularly to make sure after you pass what you have inside that it doesn't happen again.

  • Mine was horrible until I started taking Natural Calm magnesium supplement in warm water every day.
  • Colace & coconut milk. You can use Vaseline around your Anus to ease the passage of stool. Also, get a foot stool. Put your feet up & it makes it anatomically easier to pass large stools.

    Good luck.

I've also found 3 tablespoons of olive oil (easy to mix into a salad or toss on some veg) can really help things slide on through.

  • Milk of magnesia helps. My doctor recommended taking stool softeners on a daily basis (i.e miralax or colace). Don't take milk of magnesia every day though because you'll get the runs. Lol. Hope this helps =)
  • My doctor has me taking Metamucil free and clear once daily. It works great and it's so easy to use because it can be basically added to everything in order to take it.
  • -probiotics (apparently ok to take a double dose discuss with doctor)
-magnesium citrate up to 1gram/day (according to my naturopath and doctor this was an acceptable dosage, I'm not a medical professional)
-metamucil (could make you gassy like all fiber can if you are already constipated or you aren't used of large doses, use with caution. I recommend starting slow to start to see how you tolerate)
-some people say a big glass of warm water first thing works
-prunes with lots of water or prune juice (lots of fiber also has a natural laxative)
-senekot (I got crampy on this so I had to stop it, according to my doc that is common since it stimulates the smooth intestinal muscle to contract)
-restoralax (my doc told me it was OK to take everyday, but it's not officially on the Canadian OK List, so I would ask first.) This is the only thing that has definitely worked for me.

I've been trying all this stuff, if you can believe it. Constipation SUCKS! Feeling so much relief now that I found something that works. I hope you find something fast!
  • I have had the exact same issues. Milk of Magnesia has been the best bet for me. A coworker gave me a tip to take a small tbsp every other day and it's works great (when I remember)
  • Thanks for all the replies, I got milk of magensia and has worked wonders. Thank so much.
  • If it ever gets really bad. A suppository and enema can be used.
  • I know it sounds simple but have you tried eating cereal?  I think it helped for me.
