I've had constipation for a pretty good while. I will be 17 weeks tomorrow and my doctor gave me a list of things I could take for it but was wondering which has worked best for stools that are "too big" feeling which make it hard to pass and very painful. I've tried the activia yogurt which helped with going but not very much as making it easy. All I drink is water, some times I may drink some milk or apple juice, but it's mainly water. Nothing seems to help and I am in so much need of relief from this. Thanks in advance.
Re: medicines to help with constipation(kinda tmi)
I did quite a bit of research and determined that I'd just go ahead and try to take some glycerin suppositories. I got the ones for children and tried that first. I was able to go, but you have to try to keep it in as long as you can. If you go right when you feel the urge all you'll pass is the suppository. It does need a little bit of time to melt inside of your body before it helps.
One time after that I had the same problem, but a lot worse and I was out of town, so no access to my childrens glycerin suppositories. My mom went to the store for me and bought the regular adult kind and after leaving it in for a while and taking a warm shower I was able to go. It did hurt, but afterwards I felt completely cleaned out which I hadn't felt my entire pregnancy.
Good luck.
I've also found 3 tablespoons of olive oil (easy to mix into a salad or toss on some veg) can really help things slide on through.
LFAF Summer 2016 Awards:
-magnesium citrate up to 1gram/day (according to my naturopath and doctor this was an acceptable dosage, I'm not a medical professional)
-metamucil (could make you gassy like all fiber can if you are already constipated or you aren't used of large doses, use with caution. I recommend starting slow to start to see how you tolerate)
-some people say a big glass of warm water first thing works
-prunes with lots of water or prune juice (lots of fiber also has a natural laxative)
-senekot (I got crampy on this so I had to stop it, according to my doc that is common since it stimulates the smooth intestinal muscle to contract)
-restoralax (my doc told me it was OK to take everyday, but it's not officially on the Canadian OK List, so I would ask first.) This is the only thing that has definitely worked for me.
I've been trying all this stuff, if you can believe it. Constipation SUCKS! Feeling so much relief now that I found something that works. I hope you find something fast!
