Tomatoes

My doctor told me not to eat tomatoes, so I haven't. I asked why and she said she just didn't want me to eat tomatoes. I thought it was weird? Anybody have anything similar happen to them?

Re: Tomatoes

  • Unless you have been complaining about acid reflux I have no idea why she would say this. If my doctor gave me a 'just because' reasoning I would feel it was unacceptable.

Nope, no acid reflex. I just thought it was weird. Me and my baby are doing good! That's why I was confused when she said that.
  • Really strange.... I would want a reason ... I know sometimes there might be listeria in certain produce but that would involve a recall and is not a common problem (and would apply to all produce which I hope she did not advise against).
  • I would love to know your doctors reason - I have been craving and eating lots of toasted tomato sandwiches for the past couple months!
  • I love tomatoes-- and tomato sauce... and of course, ketchup!
I've heard of staying away from it when heartburn/acid reflux is bad as PP's have mentioned... but not for any other reason.

  • Good grief. I love tomatoes. I have the little cherry ones with a salad almost all the time. I'd love to know what the reasoning was too.

  • BC I said so... Is not a reasonable answer from A Dr.
  • This post is a really great example of why blindly listening to your doctor without being informed is never a good idea...
  • Ask them to clarify. Maybe they meant stay away unless they are cooked and extremely well washed. otherwise, idk. but you should definitely as for clarification.

What else do you put in your sandwich because a toasted tomato sandwich sounds really good right now.
    agreed.

  • You probably should have asked more probing questions as to why she didn't want you to eat tomatoes.

I either do butter and salt and pepper. Or, cheese whiz, with salt and pepper. Or sometimes if i'm feeling fancy, hard cheese with salt and pepper.

I can't speak for @lshylko though. She may do it differently.

  • Umm I'd be upset if my Dr left me in question like that and MH would be too. That's strange!! Tomatoes??
  • Mmm.. Now I want tomatoes!
  • The special ingredient is a little mayonnaise (and a bit of salt and pepper). Delicious :)
  • This is one of the dumbest things I've read in quite a while. Unless there is some particular individual reason you can't eat tomatoes, then I would highly suggest switching OBs. Tomatoes are quite good for you and should pose no risk (more than any other food) to a normal pregnancy. If you have special circumstances, I would hope you would know what they are and that your Dr. would have explained them to you.

Me too, I eat between 2 and 3 tomatoes a day. I would be miserable without them =0
  • That's unusual? At least from what I've heard? My doctor is pretty relaxed though about foods in general. I'd be curious to hear your doctor's reason, if you ask.
  • Is your K+ (potassium) level normal? Unless it's high (as tomatoes are very high in potassium and very nutritious) this makes no sense especially if your dr won't tell you why? I would be finding a new OB....
