traces of blood in urine

My last 2 dr visits (18 weeks and 22 weeks) I've had traces of blood in my urine. It has only been microscopic and I'm not actually seeing anything myself. The first time I was treated with antibiotics and this last time my Dr has referred me to a urologist. Has anyone else had issues with this? If you went to a urologist what did they do for you? Thanks!!!

Re: traces of blood in urine

  • I have not experienced this. However, if I were you I'd be interested to know if there was bacteria in your urine as well. When you were treated for the blood the first time with an antibiotic, what was the bacteria and what antibiotic was used to treat it? Or, if they ever did a test to see what bacteria was growing or if they just treated you with a broad spectrum antibiotic. Hopefully it's nothing and you can get in quickly to the urologist to get some answers.

  • I think I may have posted about this on someone else's thread about kidney stones, so I'll make this short and sweet :). I went to the hospital twice with horrible pain in my back on one side. Once they found blood and no bacteria, the second time it was both. I now see a urologist because I had some stones going on. You may not be in pain or anything, but your doctor could be suspicious of a stone. From my experience obgyns don't treat kidney issues, whether you're pregnant or not. They may just want you to see a urologist so you're prepared if it is a stone and have a doctor to refer to that specializes in kidney/bladder problems should a stone arise. The dumb things move around a bunch, so if you do have one and it doesn't hurt, it's not much to worry about besides infection. I know I still have a large one in there that I'll get zapped after pregnancy!
  • Your doctor is very wise to refer you to a urologist as this issue is their specialty....you definitely want to get to the bottom of it to make sure that the antibiotics are working and are actually targeting the actual problem... Best of luck!

There was no bacteria either time. And I was treated with macrobid which Is an antibiotic specifically for UTIS. I'm hoping it's nothing as well!!

@iheartpancake‌ I sure hope it's not a kidney stone. If so I'm thinking it must be small enough to not cause any other pain..yet :-) good luck to you!

  • I have/had kidney stones. I passed one in my first trimester. The nurses liken passing a stone to child birth but I know it is a different level of pain. Passing a kidney stone is painful but usually short lived (depending on the size) - passing a child is lengthy and probably more exhausting (being this is my first I cannot say for sure obviously).

There are many causes for blood in urine even in trace amounts. urologists/nephrologist will likely perform an ultrasound (although I am unsure if they can perform a contract study while pregnant) to rule out stones. Occasionally I have had boughts of interstitial cystitis which is just inflammation of the bladder which can cause hematuria (blood in the urine). Minor nephritis (kidney infection) can also occur and it can go undetected in your urine (culture negative) but may present with mild elevations on a cbc.

Personally I HATE when a doctor just throws you on antibiotics without a culture to confirm. Macrobid is very safe in pregnancy (one of the few antibiotics you can actually take).

I've had 9 kidney stones and have vaginally delivered two children. . . A kidney stone is MUCH more painful. My first stone took over a week to pass and I was in excruciating pain. My longest labor was 12 hours. . .

You don't "pass" a child, you deliver them and I'd rather deliver a child than pass a kidney stone any day of the week.
  • I had blood in my urine when I was EXTREMELY dehydrated (64oz is not enough. Apparently) hydrate hydrate hydrate! And continue to follow up with your doc!
