Swollen vulva

Hi ladies, sorry if this is to personal! I've just made it into my third trimester and for the past few days I've been in so much pain down there and have no idea what's actually going on... My vulva has turned a dark purple colour and is so swollen it hurts to even walk now... The thought of going to the toilet just makes me want to cry! Is anyone else experiencing this?

Making a doctors appointment tomorrow!

Re: Swollen vulva

  • No advice for you because I've never experienced this, but yikes that sounds like a nightmare (no offense). I hope you get some relief after your appointment!

  • Gotta love all of the extra blood flowing.

    Angel Baby: M/C 7/15/14 at 7wk
    BFP: 8/23/14 - Due 4/28/15  - It's a BOY!
  • Yes it's not fun, I want to put an ice pack down my pants constantly, just another joy of 3rd trimester
  • This is why I love these community boards because there are other woman going through similar situations. I've been googling this problem for about a week because it's been happening to me and I was scared out if my mind but luckily I felt relieved when I saw everyone saying it's pretty normal in your third trimester and it's because the baby is positioned where preparation for birth is starting and because of the extra blood flow.
  • This happened to me last preg. My crotch would "fall asleep" and tingle. It looked engorged and strange like a purple flower! lol

  • Vulval varicosities. Absolute agony. Unfortunately often get worse in subsequent pregnancies too. Can be unilateral or bilateral and even extend down the thighs and legs. Another side effect of increased blood flow and the effects of progesterone.
I found SRC pregnancy shorts were helpful, as well as keeping off your feet as much as possible.
Good news is they go away after delivery x
  • I have something similar. I asked my doctor and he said it is completely normal. Your veins can surface causing it to swell. I feel you though, it is extremely uncomfortable at times!
  • As strange as it is- put ice on it! Relief in minutes!!
