Weight gain sky rocketed

so I hadn't gained much weight til the last three weeks and it's been about 3-4lbs a week now. I'm 21 weeks and gained a total of 12lbs so far. I'm still running 5-6 miles three or four times a week and other various exercise activities .. I've been eating more, but of course it's been healthier meals/snacks. I just feel like that's a lot to gain in one week! My BP is around 104/58 and I've had some dizziness, but I doubt it's preclampsia. Should I be worried or yall think its normal?

  • If you are worried, call your doctor.

  • You should definitely ask your doctor
  • Ask your doctor, but I am 22w 4d and went to the doctor today and since my 18w appointment, I have gained 8lbs. I was shocked because I run 5-6 miles 5 times a week plus I am active and walk a lot. I started off a few lbs underweight and the first 18 weeks I gained between 4-5lbs. My doctor said as long as my vitals were fine, I should expect peaks and plateaus with weight gain. I just wasn't expecting that much weight gain between 18-22 weeks, especially because between weeks 13-18 I only gained 1lb.

The weight gain sounds normal. But have you talked to your doctor about how much you're exercising? It seems like a lot to me!

As for the dizziness, definitely consult with your doc. You don't want to think everything's fine only to find out you have a bigger problem on your hands. Better to be safe than sorry!

I'm very active, as well, my doctor said to listen to my body and not to over do it and also not to start anything new in my routine. It sounds like you're being healthy and active and I think that deserves great applause!

I've gained around 13 lbs (20 weeks) and the last 8 or so has been in the past month. She said it was fine and probably wouldn't happen every month.

Everything that I've read says 25-35 pounds is healthy an normal for an average weight person, so to me it sounds like you're right on track. (Disclaimer: I am not a medical professional).

Also, don't stress about losing that weight later. (Just in case you were.) If you're planning to breastfeed and keep a healthy diet and active lifestyle, the poundage will melt away before you know it. (I've seen this first hand a few times now.) :)

Keep up the good work!! (And do talk to your doctor, if you feel like something abnormal is going on. You can never be too safe at this time.)
  • Unless there are other medical issues doctors aren't usually concerned with lack of weight gain. I have active friends who have gained as little as 18 pounds throughout the whole pregnancy (without any complications) and others who have gained in excess of 30. Every person and every pregnancy is different.
  • Only your doctor can advise if you should be worried.
  • I had a similar gain last month and am hoping this month is less because I don't want to gain 8 pounds per month! For me, I had just eaten too much over Christmas and underestimated my food intake in general. I was worried about PE too as I am 36 yrs old but seem to be fine. Interesting to hear about the peaks and plateaus in weight, hopefully this is the case for me!
  • It's fine. You won't gain 8 lbs every month. Your body is probably storing fat for later in the pregnancy. and a BP of 104/58 is on the low side, so I wouldn't be worried about preeclampsia.

  • All of us are hitting the point where the baby is growing at a fast rate.  I read that it's common to gain at least a pound a week from here on out.

My advice is to stay off the scale.  Eat in moderation.  Make wise choices.  Your body will gain what it wants no matter what you do.  Chances are, it will come off in the end.

I've spent years dieting and I have learned that my body can easily fluctuate 5 lbs on any given day.  It could be a high sodium meal, constipation, or just my body holding on to water that particular day.  I can't stress it enough, stay off the scale.  Your doctor will weigh you at every appointment and monitor your blood pressure.  Unless they are concerned, don't let it bother you.

  • I have an extremely hard time keeping track of my weight... even before being pregnant. My weight has a tendency to fluctuate even 5-7 pounds throughout the month depending on my cycle and water weight. Also, if I weigh myself in the morning it tends to be at least 1-2 pounds less than if I weigh at night. Because of this I haven't ever really used my weight as an indicator of my health and health of the pregnancy. I consider my vitals (blood pressure, and pulse) plus my urine and bloodwork to show my health. Also, normally I just go by how my clothes are fitting and how I feel. My doctor hasn't been concerned about anything so neither am I. Plus, every woman and every pregnancy are different. Good luck!

    Anniversary
  • Weight gain tends to spike up during the second and beginning of the third trimester because the baby is also having growth spurts. Even though I've been compulsively monitoring what I eat and staying active, I have also gained around 8 pounds in a month. I remember buying a shirt and TWO DAYS later, it didn't fit anymore!

I also get a little dizzy sometimes, after getting out of bed too fast, out of the pool (I swim). My doc says it's normal and to try those transitions slower.

Overall, a 12 pound weight gain mid-pregnancy is not unusual. You'll be gaining the same amount (maybe more) in the 16-18 weeks you have left, and some months you'll have more weight gain than others. Don't forget that a healthy weight gain during pregnancy is linked to a healthy baby!

  • I've gained over 20 pounds at 23 weeks due to IVF. I had to take progesterone, estrogen, and steroids to help maintain the pregnancy. I don't really understand the obsession over keeping weight down really low during pregnancy. All these women worried about their figures. You are growing a little human being inside you. You are going to gain weight. As long as it's not excessive (which could lead to a large baby or childhood obesity), don't worry. Your doctor will monitor your weight and tell you if you are going off track. Mine started off high due to the steroids, so my doctor just makes sure I have the normal weight gain expected from growing baby.
  • I swear, I wore pants yesterday that don't fit today. I have been surprised by the spurt that is happening for me in week 22/23! I finally bought maternity pants and I may never look back...
  • I was told that I shouldn't need to gain weight before 20wks and then a pound a week thereafter. So I have been obsessed with weighing myself in driving myself crazy!
  • @Cuij‌ that sounds a bit unhealthy.

  • I gained 8 pounds this month.. I can't step away from the food. Seriously , it's like I'm starving.
  • I gained 8 pounds this month.. I can't step away from the food. Seriously , it's like I'm starving.

Me too!! I eat and I swear my stomach is growling like 15 min later.
  • @Cuij‌ I also was told since I am considered heavy to start with that before 20 weeks no weight gain! .
  • It was my OB that told me this. To top it off, he's a very well respected and highly sought out doctor. He said this because my bmi is on the low end of the overweight category. But I'm trying not to stress over it. Just to stay healthy.
  • You're going to gain what you are going to gain based on a number of factors. I know people who have worked out 5 times a week and ate healthy and gained 60+ pounds. I know people who have done nothing active and ate whatever they desired and gained 20. Personally, it's not something I worry about too much. I would be curious to know why your doctor has told you zero pounds before 20 weeks though. That just seems like a lot of undue pressure.

  • I put on about 12 lbs in my first trimester and since I was at the low end of normal weight and usually ate very "clean" and exercises regularly, was told that it was "maternal stores", aka fat for breastfeeding.

Second trimester now probably haven't put on more than 5 lbs so far?? I actually don't weigh myself, I just let the doctor weigh me backwards and tell me if everything is good.

I only found out about the 15 lbs at 16 weeks because it was written on my lab slip. I was upset and then settled down. Don't need to see any numbers anyway, just eat healthy protein and veggies and fruits and nuts and fish etc every 2-3 hours and work out 3 times a week.

But yeah what a mind fuck in the first trimester. I thought, and accepted, that I would gain 70 lbs. probably more like 40-45 I'm guessing..

Everyone's metabolism, muscle and fat deposit, and builds are different.

I'm 5'8" and muscular/thin. Well now I'm just round and pregnant all over but as log as the baby girl inside me is great I'll keep eating what I need to eat.

Here's a thought: I don't say "oh you're pregnant wat whatever you want". No no no. That's probably what got me 15 lbs in at 16 weeks. I ate junk food and slept all the time.
  • I'm 21 weeks and have gained 4lbs. I dont really exercise other than the ridiculous amount of walking I do at work. My doctor isn't worried. I get dizzy as well but my doctor told me it's normal. However if you're worried you should ask your doctor. Everyone's pregnancy is different and no one gains weight the same.
