Trendy names

The Hazel thread, has me thinking of once uncommon names that are now becoming popular. When my Mom named me Lauren, it wasn't common at all. Fast forward 5 years, and it was in the top ten most popular names.

So, what names do you think are becoming more trendy?

I think Piper is a name growing in popularity.

Re: Trendy names

  • And I love that name BTW

  • I don't know if they are becoming more popular or just are currently popular. But I run a daycare and we have a lot of Liams, Isabellas, Sophias, Islas, Connor(Conor)..

I have a Daughter born 2/26/2013. She is pretty much amazing!

  • How do they pronounce Isla?
  • Isla - eye la

I'm not very good at writing sounds so hopefully that makes sense :)

I was going to say Harper too. Because the Beckham's had one? I doubt it's because Harper Lee is releasing a new book this year (I mean - she is, but I doubt that's why all these people are using it).

  • Where I am the name Mia is crazy popular right now! In my nieces nursery class there was 5 Mias and a Maia.
Also, quite a lot of little boys named Mason or Jayden around here.
  • Savannah is pretty popular right now.
  • Based off of what I've seen suggested on the baby names board, Cora and violet are becoming the popular girls names with grace being a popular middle name. As far as boys go Rhys and Jaxon have been seen quite a bit too.

Rhys? Like Reese? How do you say that?
I see a lot of Rylan/Rylins or Jaydens, definitely lots of Masons
  • I've only ever met people named Reese with this spelling, but Rhys is what I've seen suggested by pretty much everyone
  • I know there's the British actor of Rhys. Maybe it's the British spelling?
  • There are a lot of masons now too that I've seen, and Evelyn is coming back. I love Evelyn... But my name is Sarah and I hated growing up with 10 other Sarah's in my class. And my husbands name is William, so we both don't want our kiddos to have really popular names

More specifically I believe it's Welsh.

My sister just named my nephew Rhys (pronounced Reese)- it's a more traditional spelling (and more masculine IMO)

    Edited for grammar.

  • I don't care for the popular names. When we found out we were having a boy, I told my husband he could name him. He originally picked out Ethan, which is in the top 5 boy names right now. He has since changed it to Owen, which is number 38. Not only do I like Owen better, it is MUCH less popular.
My daughter is the only one I know of with her name (Sabriel) and even though we picked a more familiar name for this baby if it would have been a girl, we chose a more ethnic spelling for it (Morrighan rather than Morgan.) I love unique names, and unique spellings, as long as you can still tell what the name is supposed to be.

I'm not too fond of the Rhys spelling because it isn't as clear about how it's said (Reese v. Rize would be my two guesses) but it passes spell check so that's good.
  • We're going with Penelope this time around. I didn't realize how much it was growing in popularity. Apparently many celebrities have named their daughters Penelope recently, so it's begun to grow in popularity.

    Hm. Who knew.
  • I have a Penelope and the nurses at our hospital said they hadn't heard the name in ages. Now I hear people say they know someone who just named their baby penelope. Ours is just over 3 years old. I have a niece named Piper as well ;) it's definitely popular right now.

  • Glad my girls names havnt been mentioned. I'd say Sophie, Ella, Bella, violet are up and coming.

I LOVE the name Ella... Unfortunately I named my cat Ella about 8 years ago so it can't be an option for the baby :)
  • Ironically I named another cat Sophie when I was a kid haha

Pretty sure these aren't "up and coming", they're already here. I think I personally know 3 of each (all under 5)

  • The name Sawyer is big in the South. We liked that name for years before it got popular but is now off the list bc of its growing popularity.
  • I'm definitely not a fan of names spelled differently! I'm responsible of the printing of diplomas at a college and when a name is spelled differently then the traditional way it puts added stress on getting the name spelled correctly...you would not believe how many ways people can spell a name.
