TB exposure during pg

Heya, really only wanting medical advice.

I'm going on 24 wks and for work have been asked to come and do a hospital sit with a prisoner. On arrival I found out she has confirmed TB. She's isolated in her room and is not allowed to come out however if she needs to leave for tests I have to cuff her and escort her to wherever she is to go.

I'm not too happy about this arrangement but just wondering how high is my risk of becoming infected? Of course I'll wear gloves but policy is she is responsible for face masks and we aren't allowed to wear them.

Re: TB exposure during pg

  • This is something you should talk to your doctor about, and only your doctor about. If the health of your baby is at stake, don't leave it up to some anonymous people on the Internet who may or may not know what they are talking about.

  • You need to wear a N95 mask when dealing with anyone with TB... So I would be refusing if the did not allowe to wear a mask. But that being said she may no longer be contagious depending what stage of her treatment she is in an a dr or nurse should be able to inform you of this I would think. Also most healthy people who are exposed to TB develop what is called latent TB so you would not become sick. Basically you carry the germ in your body but your bodies immune system creates a barrier around it so you cannot get sick or make anyone else sick. There is a chance that over your lifetime that barrier can break down however so depending on your paticular situation a doctor may prescribe a preventative treatment. Which would definelty not be given until after you deliver.

    Hey there,
I work in an ICU and we occassionally get TB patients. Since I have gotten pregnant I do not go in any isolation rooms such as a patient infected with flu or TB. When the patient is traveling outside of their room they are to wear a mask, but I do not see why they would not allow you to wear one as well. Now before I was pregnant we had a patient that had TB and we didn't know it until about a week and a half later and we had all been in and out of his room and everyone was fine, but being pregnant your immune system is lower so that's why I don't go in any isolation rooms anymore if I can get away with it. Maybe you should express your concerns to the staff and/or your boss and they can accommodate you better so you feel safer :) but I would definitely ask your doctor as well. In the mean time keep wearing gloves and wash your hands :)

Yeah, sorry, I don't have medical advice for you, because I am not a doctor. If I was, I really doubt I would be giving out medical advice on the Bump forums. You have a serious question about your potential exposure to an infectious disease and you come to the Bump of all places? JFC. You can send your doctor an email just as easily as you can post a question online. Good luck...

  • Not able to make contact with my gp at 5am. I was wanting info on standard procedures on dealing with tb patients whilst pregnant. Which is generic and non specific to my pregnancy.

Thanks for all your help, managed to speak to the nurse on duty. Hospital has a policy of no contact during pg so I'm out of here.

Yeah, ask your doctor, not a message board.
  • Ask your doctor please. They are a quick phone call away. Or email.
