Babies: 3 - 6 Months

popping binky back in during sleep

We have had some sleep setbacks with DD. As a newborn she slept decent because as we know, newborns sleep a lot. When she hit about 3 months she started waking up more often. We put her down at night and within an hr we normally have to pop the binky back in a couple of times. Then maybe a few more throughout the night. We usually try to ignore when possible but when she keeps making noise we worry she will wake 3 yr old sibling plus she keeps fussing. Is this something they eventually outgrow?

Re: popping binky back in during sleep

  • I think my DS is just starting to figure out how to get his back in if he finds it when he wakes. He's almost 6 months. We use the MAM glow in the dark binkie at night in hopes that it will help him find it...and we throw 3-4 in the crib at night in hopes that if he wiggles his arms around he'll find one of them.

  • Our baby started doing the same thing right around 4 months. When her pacifier came out while sleeping she woke up, we let her cry for a little while and she ended up sleeping all night, only waking once to eat. The older your baby gets, the more aware of her surroundings she will be. When her binky comes out and you run in to give it to her, she will expect this behavior more and more as she grows. It is best to let her cry it out for a few nights!!! I was weary at first, but it really worked.
  • Our 4 month old is going through this right now. The past week has been him up every hour of the night (after he just spent almost a month sleeping through the night). Last night he only woke once, but went right back to sleep after I went to his crib and put his paci in. Evidently, this is normal, and there are some sleep "retraining" techniques that are supposed to work (or at least help in the long run). We've been doing them and he's been getting better, bit by bit.

As far as putting his own pacifier back in, when he's awake he can grab his paci and tries to put it in his mouth himself, but he's only successful about 15% of the time. He can't seem to get the nipple in his mouth - he always tries to put it in backwards or sideways, lol. :D

I def understand what your saying and am familiar with CIO, I was just told you should wait to do it until closer to 6 mos. but maybe that is just an average.

  • Try Sleepy Wings. It's like a swaddle jacket with two pacifier holders. It may work for your baby. But it takes some getting used to.image
