High White Blood Cell - Seeing hematologist.

Anyone else get sent to a hematologist for high white blood cell count during pregnancy?  What was your experience? Mine has been increasing steadily since my first appointment despite not having any known illnesses.

My doctor has assured me it's completely normal, just a precaution, blah blah blah... but that hasn't stopped me from goggling every sign and symptom of leukemia all morning and convincing myself I have all of them.

Re: High White Blood Cell - Seeing hematologist.

  • Have they mentioned anything about Idiopathic thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP)? My best friend has this and basically her white blood cells are high and basically attack the platelets. She had to get transfusions before, during and after pregnancy. But, other than that she had a normal, healthy pregnancy. But, I would listen to your doctor and definitely do not hesitate to ask him/her any of your questions.

  • He wouldn't give me any answer as to what it could or couldn't be... he said that was for the hematologist to answer (and why he was sending me...) I don't think he wanted to freak me out. He just kept saying it was only precautionary. Which is dumb because he knew I was going to immediately Google...

He DID say that all of my other numbers, platelets, red blood cell count, etc., looked good... so hopefully that's a good sign.

  • I went through this when I was 9. They thought I had leukemia. After blood tests every single week for months.. It went down on its own and they never figured out what I had. I guess it can just happen sometimes.
  • No experience with this, but I just wanted to send you some positive vibes. Hope it all turns out well!

  • I have low red platelets , naturally they are low, just before delivery of my first they dropped substantially and they were concerned about bleeding and inserting the epidural. I ended up having no real issues. Now with my second they are going to monitor via blood work. I have a specialist appt in a couple weeks.

  • Hugs to you right now!  I'm sure everything is ok but it can be scary.  I had a thyroid cancer scare during my last pregnancy so I know how frightening anything like that can be when you are pregnant.  I hope that you get in to see the hematologist really quickly!

  • @mamahawk12‌ do you mind me asking what your WBC count was (if you know)? Sorry to hear... hope any hematology work up is unremarkable!
He said it was in the 18k range... I guess "high" is considered anything above 11k.

  • Thanks @thepalendromicone - I've been reading various articles and online forums and people are talking about having numbers in the 60 and 70 thousands... which makes me feel a little better! But the fact that it's been continuially rising without symptom is still worrying me. And I'm just a worry-wart by nature ;)

I see the hematologist tomorrow, so I'll update then!

  • I'm stepping out of the lurker shadows because this happened to me during my first pregnancy. Although the cause for your high counts may be totally unrelated to mine, I thought I'd share my experience to ease your mind. I had the same thing happen and was referred to a hematologist. I don't remember if I ever received a defined diagnosis, but he basically said baby was fine and getting all of my nutrients, and I wasn't getting what I needed. I had to get B12 shots throughout my pregnancy, 4x a week and then tapered down to 3. I never felt bad and the most annoying part was that he followed me on about the same schedule as my OB throughout my pregnancy, and it was quite the long wait in the waiting room (okay, the constant blood draws weren't exactly a party). He also discovered I was anemic and prescribed iron pills later on in the pregnancy, but that was it. My counts went back to normal after delivery. I'm sending you good vibes and hope your biggest issue is the waiting room!
  • I have higher than reference range white blood cell count too that has increased over my pregnancy so far. My midwife has seen this and is not concerned at this point based on her experience. She would be concerned if they were a lot higher. I'll try to remember later to post my actual numbers. Definitely see what the hemotologist has to say. but, try not to worry. Its not uncommon in pregnancy for this to happen. number isn't that high. You may also be fighting a bug.
