Elective C-Section

The doctors are suggesting a c-section for me due to size/lack of dialtion/effacing/dropping etc - which I am fine with at this point.  They keep referring to it as an "elective c-section".  Anyone have experience with the phrase? Could this potentially mean insurance won't cover it?

Re: Elective C-Section

  • I could be wrong, but I thought elective just meant it wasn't under life or death circumstances.
    How many weeks are you?

  • It sounds to me by the way that you've just described it that it is medically recommended. I would think it should definitely be covered but you should definitely have the hospital confirm that for you if you're concerned.

  • Doctors can usually only guess at size anyway, and dialation and effacement really mean nothing until you are in active labor. I think with those reasons, anything prior to your due date sounds like elective. That being said, some doctors do consider size as being a medical reason for c-section while others don't (like mine).

The term "Elective C-Section" usually means you are sick of being pregnant and just want baby out. Those posts never go over well on this board. As the suggestion is coming from you doctor, generally that's medical necessity not elective.

  • A word of caution on the size of babies - this late in the game they are estimates only can can be off as much as 25%. At 38 weeks I was told Pepper was 9 lbs. 9 ozs. - give or take 1.5 lbs. If you are ok with a C-section go for it - if you would like to try a vaginal birth you can stand your ground a little.

My midwife and paranatologist have agreed to let me try a vaginal birth despite the large size because the head to shoulder ratio is within normal range (indicates large shoulders when the abdomen is much larger than the rest of the baby). If i do not progress once labor begins, they might suggest a C-section, but I at least get to try. C-sections are a major surgery and baby misses out on the pressure of the birth canal that can dislodge fluid in the lungs and help them adapt to life outside better.

  • I think it's considered elective vs. emergency. Double check with your insurance just in case.

  • Like the above poster said, elective just means not an emergency. A c section is still called "elective" if planned due to medical reasons.
  • I am seconding many of the PP's. My doctor just scheduled a c-section for me due to little man being breech. I asked what will happen if I went into labor prior to the scheduled date. She said that would turn it into an emergency c-section. So I think they label anything scheduled or outside the realm of emergency as elective even though there is a medical reason for it.

  • Just as far as the size goes.. They wanted me to get an "elective" csection because of size. They said my baby would be over 9lbs. I had him on the 5th after saying no to section and trying for vaginal delivery first. He came out 7lbs 12oz.

As PPs have mentioned....elective just means not an emergency. If you have specific questions clarify with your doc and insurance.

And as far as size - yes, estimates can be quite off but also accurate. My LO measured 9lb 2oz on 1/29. She was born 2/1 and weighing 9lb 9oz. Vaginal delivery with vacuum assist. Not gonna lie; it hurt like a bitch even with the epi and I'm not entirely sure I'll ever be the same.....but it can be done
