Recurrent UTIs?

So I had my first UTI of this pregnancy a couple of weeks ago (finished taking my antibiotic last Friday). For the past couple of days I've been having some achy feelings and after going to the bathroom I'll feel like I have to pee again. I did one of those home UTI test strips a few minutes ago and it came back positive. WTH! Can they come back so quickly? When I had my 16 week appointment last Friday nothing showed up when I gave a urine sample. Anyway, I guess I'm just surprised that its back so soon (or maybe it never fully went away?). I'm going to call my doc tomorrow to see if I can stop by and test at the office to confirm it before requesting antibiotics again. Has anyone else dealt with recurrent UTIs?

Re: Recurrent UTIs?

  • I used to get them constantly. I have an issue that can easily cause them. Thankfully I haven't had one in years but I'm sorry you have one to begin with. I believe they can come back quickly especially during pregnancy but clearly I'm not a doctor. Lots of cranberry juice and call the doctor the moment you think you are getting one. They can become very painful if they haven't been already so getting a script early is important.

  • Yes I have had so many of those... What helped me was cutting out any substitute sugars (no diet drinks, Splenda, Crystal Light, etc.). Obviously drink plenty of water & cranberry juice & eat yogurt at least once a day. I haven't had one since I've kept this up regularly. (:
  • I had 3 in one month!!!  Horrible . The first two courses of antibiotics seemed to work at the time, but maybe not because I never checked my urine after, and within a week, I had another one.  The third one was a different antibiotic, and urine was checked a couple days ago, and it's all clear.  And no amount of "all the right things" worked for me; I drank water and cranberry juice, ate yogurt, wore cotton undies, wiped front to back and peed before and after sex.  Nothing worked.
  • I also had them constantly at the start of my pregnancy. My OB prescribed me 3! different antibiotics before we were finally able to knock it out. I was miserable! I hope you get some relief soon!
Also, try the AZO pills. They are pregnancy safe, help with the pain and help with urinary tract health. But make sure you wear panty liners because they are cranberry pills and turn your urine an orange/red color sometimes.

  • Thanks ladies! I talked to the nurse at my OB's office and they're prescribing a different anitbiotic this time to see if it helps clear it up. Fingers crossed it will! UTIs don't hurt when I pee, but they make my whole lower abdomen ache which I just hate.

  • Mine was like that. I don't think I had a UTI but a bladder infection (but I'm not a doctor). It didn't hurt when I went to the bathroom, only before when my bladder was full and after once I'd emptied my bladder. It spasmed like crazy and I was miserable. There was a time that I didn't sleep for several days because it kept me up all night hurting so bad!
