Baby Outgrowing Exersaucer- Any Ideas?

Hi everybody! My 9 month is too big for his bouncy seat and is bored with his exersaucer (and is hitting the weight limit for it anyway) - he used to sit in it happily while I ate breakfast, and now I'm lucky if I get 5 minutes out of it. I was wondering if anyone could recommend baby containment/distraction toys for this next phase? He can sit up and is aaaaaalmost crawling, and I need something interactive that will hold his attention. Any suggestions are appreciated!

Re: Baby Outgrowing Exersaucer- Any Ideas?

  • Why can't you just put him on the floor and surround him with some toys?  I put my boppy behind them and other toys around so they had to reach for them.

But honestly I put my LOs in their highchair during breakfast and we ate at the same time.
  • Loading the player...
  • If you want to keep him contained, put him in the high chair.

Otherwise I would be putting him on the floor so he can practice sitting and learn to crawl.

If he's not crawling, why do you want to contain him?

  • The highchair works some mornings, some mornings the pack and play filled with toys is enough to occupy him. With the highchair I usually pull into the bathroom and give him a bite of food everytime he gets squirmy! Buttttt... sometimes I just have to chase him around! :)
  • I think I worded this wrong; I just wondered if anyone had any toys or things like an exersaucer that held LO's attention particularly well - my little guy used to be captivated by his exersaucer, and it was great because he was 'contained', so I could eat, brush my teeth, etc. We do put him in the high hair while we eat. Sorry for the confusion.

...yikes. He loves playing on the floor with his toys, and I am able to get stuff done around the house. I was simply looking for toy recommendations.
  • At that age if I needed them contained to be safe they went in the pac n play with toys while i did whatever. But no toy is going to contain them and entertain them at this age. There attention is more focused on learning new skills like crawling, pulling up, etc.

Um, no. You were looking for some baby-containing device masquerading as a toy.

Again, if your child is not mobile yet, why can't you get things done around the house while he plays on the floor with his toys?

He is just about to start crawling, and is rolling around on the floor and scooting. I'm not sure why you are so worked up over this, but I'm sorry if I offended you.

I was thinking of getting a pack n play; thanks for the suggestion!
  • We have a play pen with a play wall with lots of buttons to push and it plays music. I put a gym mat under it so it's cushioned if he falls. DS is trying to walk and crawls good now so I put him in the play pen when I need to go to the bathroom or wash my hands or something. It keeps him entertained briefly, not for very long. It also protects him from the dog and vice versa when he's crawling around.

  • Play pen is what I would suggest. My baby isn't crawling yet either but he's scooting and I have to keep an eye on him. I don't mind just leaving him in the floor if I'm in the room but if I leave it for any length of time then I have to put him in the play pen. We are at a point that we are going to have to baby proof our house some. I think I'm going to have to gate off my older sons room and keep just toddler approved toys in the main area. My older son has so many toys with small pieces and little marbles that I'm worried about younger son getting a hold of them. So that's mainly why I keep the pack and play up. I can leave the room and don't have to worry so much.

  • Put him on the floor. At this point your only containment options would be a pack and play. I just shut all doors and place baby gates where needed and let them go. It is good for them to explore. As long as you have baby proofed you should be fine. Mine usually stay close to me. I can eat breakfast, sew, cook etc while keeping an eye on them.
  • Don't worry, I get what you're saying. :)  Yeah, a high chair can help contain and maybe a toddler play yard although they may still fumble over without supervision.  Walkers are also an option so they can roam safely and you can keep an eye on them.

  • High chair with a tray of Cheerios is how I get things done in the kitchen. Other than that, LO plays on the floor while I do stuff. He scoots around but he's never out of my eyesight so I can redirect him of needed. I keep a basket of toys on each floor so he can play wherever I need to be.

The only time I contain him is if I'm in and out of the house unloading/loading the car. We have a pack n play by the front door for this.

  • I have a jumperoo which LO loves, it's like the exercauser but she can jump! I typically use it when I have to use the bathroom or need to leave the room quick, like to start my car in the morning.
