C-sections

Elective Csection

my doctors are scheduling me for a csection due to babies size/lack of labor, etc.  However they keep referring to this as an "elective c-section".  Is this something I need to worry about insurance-wise, that they may not cover it?  Or is any c-section that isn't "emergency" is labeled as elective?

Re: Elective Csection

  • I had a scheduled c-section due to baby's size.  I'm not sure what you mean by lack of labor unless you are past your due date.  Basically, they noticed a couple of months before my due date that the baby was starting to measure large.  They did a few ultrasounds and took careful measurements.  Once I was a couple weeks from my due date, they explained that the problem wasn't really his size, but more his proportions in relation to my proportions.  One doctor said that she absolutely always recommends to at least try for a natural birth, except for in a situation like this.  She said that the baby could get stuck in the birth canal or his shoulder could be dislocated, and he could even have permanent nerve damage.  They never referred to this as "elective."  I really didn't care how he came out, as long as he was healthy and safe.  (I had no problems at all with the c-section by the way.  I had a minor reaction to the the anesthesia, but it was fine.  My recovery really wasn't very long either.)
