  • Around 20 weeks my midwife told me I'm slightly anemic and to take iron pills. When I did I started throwing them up and she advised me to eat iron rich foods instead.

My midwife called in sick at my 39W6D appointment and I went to see an OBGYN who was covering her shifts. This woman asked if I was taking my iron pills and when I told her no and why she sarcastically crossed her fingers and said, "Well I guess that we'll just pray that you don't bleed out!" And then a few moments later, "Here's hoping you don't need a blood transfusion. Let's so how it goes!"

I kept digging with her to find out if I should be doing more but her sarcasm just oozes out, and when I contacted my midwife and told her what she said she gave me the same advice of eating iron rich foods.

I'm absolutely terrified now. Especially one day past my due date. I feel like I'm not in the best of hands - even with a second opinion :(

I'm also anemic and the iron supplements make me sick too so I feel your pain. I started taking them every other day instead of every day and eat iron rich foods and fortified cereals along with the pills
  • @mandig990 I'm going to start taking the pills anyway again. I Googled and got more helpful info about taking with Vitamin C to help keep it down, but I'd rather be puking than in need of a blood transfusion! I felt like it was irresponsible of the OBGYN to remark sarcastically to me and leave me without a clear answer. Is there anything else that makes the pills easier to ingest that you've found?

  • My OB did an internal exam this morning and now I have really bad cramps. It is pretty much always "on" so I don't think it is contractions...just pain with no purpose.
  • Had an appointment today at 38.5..she checked me internally, nothing happening yet & ouch that was uncomfortable. The past couple of times they reminded me which hospital to go too...apparently some women have been showing up at random hospitals lol. I can't imagine being so unprepared and not even knowing which hospital your practice delivers at!!!

@Sbmack914 ughh that is so rude!!

  • babykoz214 I'm right there with you. No dialation but the OB says his head is as low as it can get before delivery. It's great because I have a supervisor at work who swears I'm still carrying high.I've already told her what the doctor says but she keeps saying he doesn't look like he dropped.  I'd think after carrying this LO for 9 months, I can tell he's way lower than he's ever been by my massive hip pain and more frequent trips to the bathroom. Oh, and the doctor who had his hand up there...I'm pretty sure he's more qualified to tell me baby's location.

@sbmack914: Yes, because sarcasm is what you need at 9 months pregnant, especially in regards to your and baby's health. I"m also on iron supplements for Pica and RLS, but it might not be as high of a dose as yours. I haven't had any issues keeping it down, but I always take them with dinner.

    Deja vu??

  • Ugh I just realized I posted in yesterday's spam thread accidentally. Stupid. Oh well, look there to see a riveting post about my crazy nesting and a picture of my dog post grooming lol.
@SquirrelsRWatching‌ I honestly can't tell if I have dropped. I mean obviously I must have since my baby is so low, but I just don't feel like my belly is like pointing downward like I expected it too. I should have taken more pictures of my bump along the way for comparison purposes!
Oh well at least we know we're close!!

Here's a question, I have only had 1 "internal" and it was yesterday. All my dr did was put a glove on and poke me with her finger. She didn't open me up with that spreader thing or actually look at my cervix. She simply felt, and it was like a 2 second thing. Is that how your experiences have been? Like she didn't even mention effacement.. But isn't that something they need to see?

I've only been examined once, and that was because I was contracting regularly after a car accident.  Pretty much all the nurse did was put on a glove and stick her hand (okay, it was a finger, but it was so uncomfortable it might as well have been her hand) in there and poked where my cervix is.  Then she (thankfully) stopped.  It was quick (which is the only positive thing I can say about it), she didn't stick their head down there to look and used no tools.  So it sounds like yours was pretty similar to mine, so I guess that's standard.

Can you opt out of internal exams?

Also, who are these people on the birth announcement thread??

I've never had one. I've chosen to opt out until labor hits, but I also have a midwife so I'm not sure about ob practices/etc!

    And.. Seriously.

I posted my spam on Tuesday by accident!
My spam: oh what I wouldn't give for this nesting energy. It's mostly just anxious energy mixed with total fatigue, and the combination makes me feel like I got hit by a truck.

Plus, hubby said he wants to see a doc about his back. Don't know if you all remember the shingles, but if he asks for a doctor it's serious. We're fairly sure he has ankylosing spondylitis since his father and grandfather had it. Yikes.
One of the alternative treatments for it is to eat essentially a paleo diet + dairy (no/low starch), so I've been researching stuff and at first I was super excited that I found lots of recipes! And now I'm just overwhelmed.
I feel like telling the baby "sorry for your genes, dude". I know it's on DH's mind too that there's a high likelihood that our son will have it too.
  • I had an appointment at my OB today and she still wasn't sure of the position of the baby. She even brought in another OB to feel and neither of them were sure... So she sent me to get a u/s and thankfully LO was head down! I'm so glad!

Anyone had an update on @Hayleybug55?

Yes, you can.  I only had that one after my car accident because my midwife insisted on it since my contractions were regular and they were trying to decide whether or not to stop them.  However, at my appointment a few days after the accident, I opted out of the internal exam.  I'm going to opt out of the one at my appointment tomorrow too.  Cervical checks are unnecessary unless your water breaks or you're contracting enough to be in Labor and Delivery.  I don't see any reason to have them check me and risk introducing bacteria if it isn't necessary.

And I keep wondering the same thing!  It's hard to get excited about people's babies when that's the only thread they post to and never post anything else.  I'm also active on the dark side and love seeing all the birth announcements there :)

    Edit:  words are hard

  • @babykoz214‌ Same experience as you today..doc just stuck her finger in me..I guess they can tell by feel. :-S ..my dr told me they wont check again unless I reach 41 weeks. I feel like it was pointless today but whatever it only took a few seconds. Im so private so its easing me into whats to come lol
  • @Alyllyra yay for a head down baby!  I haven't heard anything from @Hayleybug55 or @masseybaby.

If either of you are checking The Bump, let us know you're okay ;)

  • @JessicaH1020‌ and @amack22‌ thanks for clearing that up. Guess that's the standard. I wasn't in any pain afterwards like many have complained so I was wondering if maybe my doc just wasn't quite as thorough or something.
Yea, I see no point for internals anyway. It's not like they mean anything. She was even like, "you can still go into labor tonight despite not being dilated at all right now"

  • @JessicaH1020‌
Is something happening with @maasybaby‌? I must have missed that, thanks for telling!

    I hope you're OK, ladies!
  • @Xoxolicia‌: I do love her! There are definitely pros and cons though. I appreciate how involved and personal she is, but sometimes with how private a person I am I feel like "get out of my business!!" I've had my moments that I wish she'd care less just because I don't like being told what to do, but the advice/etc she gives me really has helped, even if I've taken it grudgingly at times ;)
For instance, I was feeling reaaaally sick for a while and having a hard time eating anything but she gave me sort of a lecture about getting 90+ grams of protein every day. I was annoyed but I promised I would, thanks to protein shakes. After a week, I was swelling considerably less, so it obviously did something to help!

@Alyllyra, I don't know.  @massybaby is just normally is on here posting and we haven't heard from her all day.  But she might just be taking a day off from Bump craziness :)

True. I think I'm just getting paranoid now that we are in February and there are new birth announcements every day ;)
  • @sbmack914‌ wow that was uncalled for! That's the last thing you need to hear at 9 months.

@sweetdreamz6700‌ I feel your pain. I was pants down at the sink filling up my peri bottle when I peed myself. So much for that bladder re-training.

  • @HayleyBug55, glad to hear that you and LO are doing okay!  Fingers crossed for more contractions!
  • I've been checked twice just out of curiosity mainly (I know the numbers don't mean anything, but it would be nice to know if all of these BH contractions are doing anything). They are relatively quick, and the doctor never mentions effacement. I just wish they didn't hurt so much!

Also, as far as looking like baby dropped, I think my belly only just now is starting to look it. But according to my doctor he's been down for 3 weeks. Everyone carries differently, so I don't think it matters too much.

    Deja vu??

  • I'm not due until 2/26 but have had some painful contractions on and off for a week now. I'm a teacher and my administration still has not found me a long term sub. They know I'm done 2/27 or earlier if baby decides to be early. Well last night for a good hour and a half I was having painful consistent contractions. They stopped and I went back to sleep. I really thought I would be calling school today saying I wasn't coming. It's frustrating because I don't know how I will have communication with a sub if they wait until I actually go into labor. I have not been checked internally yet but my OB will check Friday. I'm curious if I'm dilated at all. I really want little one to stay put a little while longer.
  • @Xoxoalicia I just noticed that. I'm still going to be report happy as needed

  • I hate the nighttime. Every night I get RLS and only about 5 hrs of sleep between all of the tossing and turning trying to get comfortable, getting up to go to the bathroom, and insomnia. And I can't do anything because I don't want to wake up the husband. Daytime I'm fine, uncomfortable but fine, but I dread 9pm to about 3am when I finally fall into a good sleep. Anyone else?

That's all they do to check. Finger width tells them how many centimeters. My OB didn't mention effacement until I asked at my 40 week appt and the reason she never mentioned it is because I am 0% effaced. Plus no real dilation either:( but it can all happen over night as they say.

Tonight I hit a deer. It wasn't as bad as it could have been and myself and the LO are just fine. It's snowing really bad and the roads are slick, this little doe just flew out on the road. Couldn't brake fast enough, safely. So the poor thing rolled across the road and then ran back te way it came. I hate things like this. I just feel bad for the dang deer. I mean my car is a little jacked up and I had to wait over an hour for a police officer to come and file a report. But all I can think about is that poor little deer. Ahhhhh. Geez. And now I'm worried that if I send this back to my insurance that they will want me to drop off my car to have it fixed ASAP. Well my car seat is installed, and the only other vehicle I have is my husbands truck and it is not baby safe in my opinion- since it doesn't have an extended cab. So I don't know what I'm going to do.... It's just my luck in afraid. But in very happy that we made it home safe and that this wasn't near as bad as it could have been!
  • I had a checkup today and while doctor was checking me she offered to sweep my membranes. I said no pretty quick and she was fine with that. I told her when they did it for my first it was really painful. Unless mine comes on her own in the next week and 2
days, I will go in next Thursday night to be induced. They don't allow gestational diabetes patients to go over 41 weeks. We shall see if she wants to come on her own or not. Doctor still wants to see me next week if she doesn't come and hook me on the monitor to check how baby is doing.

A funny thing happened at work today-I had a student ask if I had lost weight. He is a 2nd grader and may have said it to make me feel better. I just looked at him while another student (4th grader) answers "no-she gained a baby".

I hate it too. I have all my bad contractions through the night. I sleep maybe if I'm lucky an hour before I wake. Usually wake every half hour. I'm a zombie these days!
  • What's up with people making post and then changing the title to a letter or number when they realize it wasn't the best of questions?

  • I got four straight hours of sleep last night! I then dozed on and off for another couple. Now it is 5 am and I am wide awake. I guess my body doesn't know what to do with itself after sleeping that long of a stretch any more.

I would just like them to apply my avatar back and my changed display name lol!

  • @Allie429‌ that is so sweet of the student to ask that! Might've been genuine! My friend keeps telling me it looks like I've lost weight apart from the bump of course!!

Has anyone noticed their LO reacting to strange foods? It seems everytw I eat raw cabbage salad (weird craving I know) the LO goes nuts and starts kicking really hard!

I'm really not looking forward to all these internal exams that have been discussed, but I guess that's nothing compared to the delivery!

I know how you feel. They JUST hired mine, but I still have not had any contact with them. Do what you can to plan and then if something happens...it is on them, NOT you.
