Cats.

We have a 2 year old cat. In the past, he has pooped on the bed when he is mad at us (visitors stay overnight or if we lock him out of bedroom at night), but in the past week he has been peeing on/spraying things. I'm so mad! Could it be bc of my pregnancy? He's also laying on my stomach a lot lately. We keep his litter box clean, and he is neutered too. Anyone deal with this ever?

Re: Cats.

  • Have you tried using Feliway to help curb his behavior? It could also be an underlying health issue.

When my cat was peeing everywhere it turned out to be a UTI. The vet gave him meds and injected a water pouch into his shoulder area. We changed his diet from all dry food to half dry, half wet. When he was recovering and still stressed, we kept him in the bathroom with everything he needed and misted Feliway.

But I would take your kitty to the vet first to rule out a serious health issue.

  • Thank you for the advice! Our vet is closed today, but I will call tomorrow. I will also get some of the spray.
  • We have a cat that stresses and then pees outside of the box as well. The first thing is always to double check with the vet that there is no medical cause this time around. After that there are several suggestions:

    - Use "Feliway" hormone spray or diffuser (there are also collars available.)
    - Give a treat when he does use the box.
    - If he is going in a particular area, make it unpleasant for him (such as getting a plastic runner from Home Depot and turning it upsidedown so the little spikes make him not want to walk there.)
    - If caught in the act, reprimand (spray, clapping, loud noise, etc.)

That's all my pregnancy brain can think of right now.
  • My cat is 9 now but 5 yeara ago when my husband and I moved in together she peed where he sat on the couch, not too long after that we got a dog and she peed in my laundry basket, my first pregnancy she was always within inches of me and now pregnancy 2 she is sleeping on me as I type this.
  • I recommend a "my cat from hell" marathon.
  • We have had the same issue with our cat. Unfortunately because of the smell we just gave our cats up for adoption today. Its been a very sad day in our household today. We gad them for 10yrs :(
  • @audi681 How's your kitty?

  • Thanks for asking! The vet ruled out a UTI, but told us it is probably because of all the changes going on in the house. Unfortunately, we had to put our puppy down about 2 weeks ago, and between that and my hormonal smell, the cat is really stressed. We have been using the Feliway spray, and my husband (who bought a different litter last week) refilled the box with his regular stuff today. Hoping the combination of his typical litter and the spray will work wonders! I can't stand to give up on another pet in my emotional/hormonal state!
  • Oknthis is going to sound mean but it worked. When I was little we had a cat who went in and outside when she wanted. We'll one day some lady cornered her and our cat scratched her. She called the pound and we had to keep her inside for a while kitty was pissed and started shitting on the floor. My dad got so pissed her took her and rubbed her nose on it. Us kids were crying to whole time cause we thought it was so terrible and mean but she never shit on floor again. Not saying this is the way to go cause I don't think I could do it myself just saying in that instance it worked.

    Good luck.
  • Based on the information you just gave about the cat and the situation with your dog, the pregnancy and the different litter... I would say your kitty is a bit stressed out. Feliway is good advice, they have spray and plug ins. Try to give kitty some extra petting lovin and don't give up. I would switch back to the litter you used before. Kitty is also probably grieving the loss of your dog, animals can sense these things and can get emotional about it. I saw it with one of my cats recently. I had an old boy with the peeing problem, turned out he had kidney failure. It sucked but we did all we could to help because we knew he was in pain and stressed. Good luck to you and if I can help, I would certainly be happy to!

Actually, I have learned quite a lot from that guy on My Cat from Hell. He makes really excellent suggestions!
  • I swear by stress collars, I have two, one usually does fine with change. My 4 year old kitty cannot handle it. She poos and pees outside of the box and she gets bald spots, I started her on stress collars and she hasn't gone outside of the box since.
