new here! anatomy scan/questions

edited February 2015 in June 2015 Moms
Hi! I'm Monique, I'm new to this whole bump birthboard thing so I'm not sure how it works. Yesterday, I had my level two scan and everything was perfect! My baby boy is perfectly healthy. We knew he was a boy through blood test. But I do have a question, I was 19 w 6 days and baby was measuring 21 weeks 3 days and he was one pound. They didn't change my due date, but does that mean he might be born before June 24th (my due date) or does it mean he'll be a big baby. (I was over 10 lbs. My fiance was only 6 lbs). At my 12 week ultrasound he was measuring 3 days ahead , now he's over a week ahead. The doctor is scheduling ultrasounds for 28 weeks and 34 weeks.

  • I just discovered the whole community section here the other day. I don't know how my username is what it is, I never made it that.
  • Definitely do not post a pic if you don't want XO Group/The Bump to own it forever and use it without your permission!

Unfortunately, none of us have the correct answer to your question, although I have wondered the same since my baby was measuring a little bit bigger than average at my A/S as well. I think it could really be one or the other - either baby comes early or he is just born big!

Also, you can change your username by logging into The Knot.

    Congrats on a healthy baby!

Estimated due dates are just that...estimated. Depending on your cycles and when you ovulated, your due date could be off by a pretty fair amount (for instance, mine is off by about a week because I ovulate on cycle day 20 and not 14 like they use for their estimation. So in actuality, I'm just shy of 19 weeks, not 20). Also, the measurements aren't exact and babies are just like everyone else-some are big, some are small. I'd assume by your U/S schedule though that they're monitoring it closely, so I wouldn't worry about it until they tell you there's something to worry about (which I doubt there is).

  • \Typically most OB's will say your due date is within +/- 2 weeks because of fluctuations in the cycle. Dating ultrasounds and measurements are not EXACT. Also this is a period of time where many children will have growth bursts.
  • Okay thanks !
I wasn't sure the day I conceived, my fiance and I weren't really trying to get pregnant it just kind of happened, but we a are very excited.
Also, I didn't know the bump would own any pictures, thanks to everyone that warned me about that.
  • It's odd, my dr won't tell me how my baby is measuring with any specificity. And frankly, it's probably because it confuses the heck out of people to do so - there are always so many people asking about this on these boards! Which I understand, by the way. But it kinda makes me happy my doc is a bit more relaxed about it - I asked him about measurement and he said "everything looks normal for your size and stature. We don't want to guess at weight or length, but know that we have no concerns about size".
  • At my anatomy scan, my doctor mentioned that at that point people often want to know how big baby will be when born and said the mothers birth weight can sometimes be a better predictor.  I thought that was interesting and never heard that before (not like I've ever sought out that question/answer before though).  I just did a quick Google search and saw a research article that mentioned that as well.
  • Sorry I read your guys "if you're new here, we can't help you" post. I wasn't thinking of you all as "medical professionals" just wanted to know if anyone was told anything similar to relate to. But I'll leave you alone, I've been bullied , outcasted and picked on my entire life. I didn't know that's what this would be. No sarcasm or rudeness intended. You have your little group, sorry I was late to join so I don't fit in.

Huh? We all responded nicely... Were there some mean comments that got deleted or something?

  • My due date is June 2nd but my baby has always measured ahead. My doctor hasn't changed the due date, I'm just sure my baby boy will be here late May early June whenever he is ready :) due date is just a guideline.

Ask your doctor if you have questions. That is what they are there for. As PP have said, due date is just a guide.

  • I asked my doctor the same question when my baby girl measured a little ahead and she told me that even in the womb babies go through growth spurts and will at times measure ahead or even a little behind. She said it's nothing to worry about and that your due date won't change! Hope this helps :)
  • My kiddo was measuring on the smaller side, but they didn't change my due date either. (I also went for my a/s at just under 19 weeks) My OB also said its a time of rapid change for them in there, so not to freak out, I could still have 'a whopper'. She said we'll see how we are doing as we go along before we start to worry ourselves. Of course I knew that EDD stands for 'estimated' date of delivery, but I didn't get the impression that an over or under measurement would change the estimate very much. In fact, a friend recently had a boy who measured big in the womb at her halfway scan and was overdue by about a week (I forget how long exactly) at the end. It sounds like you'll get more info at your 28 and 34w ultrasound so I guess its back to the ol' waiting game again.

Also, if you are set on delivery around or on your due date, you could always schedule a c-section, assuming nothing comes up medically between then and now that would thwart that plan.

  • At my NT scan (12w3d instead of 12w) I was measuring 3 days ahead. At my A/S I was measuring 4 days behind (19w4d instead of 20w). It's very difficult for them to be so accurate due to grow spurts and how the baby is positioned when they are measuring.

As PP's have said, if your doctor isn't worried, then you shouldn't be either.

  • @Knottie84298266‌ I'm guessing that some comments have been deleted from this thread because they weren't particularly nice. If that's the case then I'm sorry about that. Please don't let it make you feel like an outcast (I hope you haven't deleted your account) as that is not the case. Welcome to June15 and congrats on your baby boy!
