2nd Trimester

carrier/stroller/crib

I am a first time mom and I don't know which brand of carrier/stroller/crib to buy. Any suggestions? And also when I should start to buy these items?

Re: carrier/stroller/crib

  • Try google. It was my best friend. It depends.

And when to buy them it's up to you. I just waited until I was at least 7 months pregnant to get them.

    Good luck!

  • If you are planning to have more than one child, I would highly recommend buying a stroller where there is an option to add a second seat.  I used to be a nanny and saw way too many mothers purchase a single stroller only to have to turn around and buy a double a couple of years later.

As far as carriers, if there is a good store near you that will allow you to try them out I would highly recommend that.  Stay away from carriers that face out.  Personally, I love the Moby wrap for NB to about 4/5 months, then the Ergo carrier.  I still carry DS who is quite big in the Ergo.

No advice on cribs, we got one from a friend.
  • I am also a first time mom, but have the slight advantage of having been a nanny for the past thirteen years! DH and I went to Buy Buy Baby last weekend and he had a blast pushing various strollers throughout the store, they had a "car bench" set up so you could see how various carseats looked when installed, and I showed him a few things with cribs that assisted me in deciding which one I wanted. It was a lot of fun! I personally like the chicco brand for car seats. I've used the city mini stroller with the past few families I've worked for. You can buy the attachment to install any of the infant carseats to the stroller. My best recommendation for a crib would be to get a 4-1 so it goes from a crib, to a toddler bed, to a full size bed! Also make sure that the mattress can be position in three levels. As your little one grows you will keep lowering the mattress to be sure they can't pull themselves up to the point of falling out of the crib, and yet in the beginning you will be able to easily reach over the crib to gently lay your sleeping infant onto the raised crib mattress. The sales associates at Buy Buy Baby or Babies R Us are great in pointing out these various features.

  • Also a FTM.  I have a baby wrap that my mom gave me (it's like a sling, not sure of the brand), and I'm planning to use that first before deciding if I want an actually carrier.  Personally, I'm planning to buy a travel system with an infant car seat and stroller since I know the baby won't be in the infant car seat for long.  I know people have talked about investing in a stroller that fits two, but since I can't predict when I'll have my second child, I'm just planning to go with a basic stroller for now.  I'd rather upgrade later when I find that I need a larger or all-terrain stroller than to go all out on something I won't use.  I've known too many people who bought $500 strollers and had to sell them because they never used them.  I'm moving this spring, so I'm waiting to buy the crib until after I move into the new house.  It would just be one more thing to stick in the moving truck.
  • Thanks this is really helpful. I didn't have the slightest idea as what to look for in any of these items
  • I also found Lucie's List really helpful, and we used Consumer Reports to narrow things down from there.
  • I found BabyBargains book helpful when I had DS.
  • I was absolutely clueless when starting a registry but came across Lucie's List when Googling. That has been a tremendous help. Personally I'm planning to get the crib and dresser during 2nd trimester so it's in the nusery by the time 3rd trimester starts (figured less to do later on). Plus, might take several weeks for crib/dresser to be ready depending on what you buy.

For carrier and stroller, I'm waiting until after the Baby Shower to see what's left to get (planning for shower by week 32ish to allow time to purchase more).

I read some where if you have a small car to make sure the car seat fits fine earlier rather than later in case you need to swap for a smaller seat.
  • I got an ikea crib and ikea hemnes dresser with changing pad on top.

Chicco keyfit and caddy (or snap n go). This is a very lightweight and easy option. It also gives you some time (with baby) to figure out what your needs are in a stroller.

And I really enjoyed having a moby and ergo baby carrier.
  • We bought our crib today and it is a 4 in 1 with attached changer. It is from Babys R Us. We won't have a lot of space for a dresser, but there is a closet in the bedroom for storage space. We also got the mattress from BRU today.

We registered for a car seat and stroller combo and registered for an additional base for DH car. It's a Graco.

Like PP, we will wait until after the shower to see what additional purchases we will need.
  • I am reading Baby Bargains! Great book... Consumer reports for babies.

I am a FTM and so far I'm leaning towards:

Bertini Penbrooke 4 in 1 crib. I like that it is solid wood and not veneers.

Sales rep at babies r us really sold me on the Graco Modes stroller. Comes with car adapter, car seat, and it's fairly lightweight.

I would def suggest Google, buying Baby Bargains, and go talk to someone walking around the floor of Babies r us!
