Dog acting out

Having our first baby (it's a girl!) is due in June but all of a sudden our 2 year old standard poodle is getting into trouble and chewing things up when we leave for work. She'll find random stuff around the house that we had no idea that is even out! If it's clothes it's only my stuff. She has never done this before, just within the past month or two. Has anybody else have this problem? We really don't want to crate her again...but it might come to that. :(

Re: Dog acting out

  • I don't have experience like this, but if a dog is destroying things there could be multiple reasons for it. Is she bored? Do you give her enough things to chew on (rawhides, bones)? Is she being walked at the same frequency as before? A tired dog doesn't act out as much. Is she getting the same amount of play time and attention from you guys?

A friend of mine had just rescued a dog when she got pregnant and the dog started misbehaving as soon as the pee dried on the stick. The dog was well-behaved before and then started having "accidents" in the house even though she let him out several times a day. After a couple months of misery, they rehomed him and he went back to his formerly house trained self with his new owner.

So, I would look at what has changed since your dog started acting out. I think if it was solely due to pregnancy, she would have started acting out earlier than this.

  • Until 6 months ago I worked in the veterinary field for over a decade, so while that doesn't qualify me to answer this question - you need to discuss this with your veterinarian - I can tell you that animals are usually hugely dependent on routine, and sometimes even what seems like a tiny change to you is a big deal to them, and may cause them to act out. I know as my pregnancy has developed there have been changes to MY routine, so there may be something there to consider. Also, I have seen behavior in my own pets, that I'm basing on nothing scientific, just me knowing them the way I do, that they somehow know that I'm different now. Like the way animals somehow know a seizure is coming, they just KNOW. So discuss this with your vet, who should be made aware you are expecting anyway, so that they can best advise you on making your home the best it can be for baby and furbaby together. Your vet should have some suggestions.

If I change my dog's schedule, not give her as much attention, forget to give her her toys before I leave for work she will act out. She'll get on counters and tables, eat food out of my hands. As soon as I get back to normal, she is fine. She is a hyper dog and living in a small apartment sure gets boring. I try to take her for walks around the complex when we go out - so she can get some fresh air. Also, I try to play with her in the evening for a little bit to get some of her energy out and make sure she gets attention. When the baby comes, it will be harder but summer months are always easier bc the weather is nicer. Talk to your vet but try to see if giving her some stimulation such as walks or toy time  will help!

  • My non-professional opinion is that she's acting out because she is either bored or there has been a change in her routine. Has anything changed since you got pregnant? Is she going out less? It could be something small that is setting her off. Try taking her for longer walks before you leave the house and see if that helps at all.
