OB wants to induce.

I am 38 weeks as of yesterday and I went into pre early labor yesterday morning around 7. I went to the hospital around 7p.m due to having diarrhea and vomiting all day, along with having contractions. The closest my contractions got were 10 minutes apart. I went to make sure I didn't get dehydrated, which I was. Contractions stayed at 10 minutes apart until about 3 hours ago. Now they're 13-15 minutes apart. I'm 0% dilated and 80% effaced as of last night. The thing is my OB is already talking about inducing on Monday if I don't go into active labor by then. I'd be exactly 39 weeks. Her concern is the intense back pain, loss of appetite, and the contractions. But overall she said she's worried about the baby being in distress if I go that long without delivering. I've read where women go weeks in pre early labor. I know my effacement means nothing but she seems to think it does. I also know my OB is induction happy. She deals with a lot of young girls, her youngest right now is 12. When one of then ask for an induction she's quick to schedule it for 39 weeks. I'm kind of iffy about being induced due to her being notorious for this. I'd rather let my body run it's course. I guess what I'm asking is what would y'all do if your OB was pushing an induction? Of course I don't want to risk baby being in distress but from what I've researched pre early labor doesn't really distress them in most cases.
Sorry it's so long.

Re: OB wants to induce.

  • I would definitely talk to her about the pros and cons and voice your concern. It sounds strange to me that she is scheduling induction that far out if the reason is you being in labor too long. You would think she would want to do it soon if that were the reason. Hopefully your body will go ahead and do what it needs to do before then so it isn't an issue.

Yes, I forgot to put in there how weird it is that she wants to wait until I'm exactly 39 weeks. If she's truly that concerned wouldn't she monitor me for a day or two and then induce if needed? Deep down I think she just wants to induce and get it over with instead of having to deal with me.
  • I agree with @maryxc1.  Tell her your concerns and voice how important it is to you to go the full 40.  And if you don't like what she says, ask her who you can see about a second opinion.  Maybe a midwife?  I feel like my midwife is 100 times more knowledgeable than my OB, which is too bad when you consider that my OB receives the majority of the money.

  • That's really a hard decision.
My gut feeling is to let labor run its course the natural way. From what I understand, plenty of people experience pre-labor without there being any problems with the baby, but if there is something wrong then you don't want to risk it. Is she doing any test to confirm that baby is in distress? Would she let you go to 40w/natural labor if she could monitor you and the baby closely in the meantime?

I'm sorry that I am of no help, I really don't have any experience with this but I'm thinking your body is getting ready for labor and will get there on its own. I don't feel that her history of being induction-happy is very comforting for you when making this decision. Can you get a second opinion from another OB?

@Alyllyra‌ she didn't mention any monitoring. She called and told me to try to have an answer by my next appointment, which is Thursday. I was expecting her to do an NST or two since she's concerned. I could get a second opinion but I'd have to drive 30 minutes to get there. With this back pain I'm not sure I could make that drive. I'll have to see if they'll give a second opinion over the phone. I woke up yesterday feeling different and I knew something was going to happen. Like you said I think my body is getting ready for labor and I honestly think it's close. I want her to stay in until she's ready, not be evicted like that. But I also don't want to risk her being distressed.
  • Definitely insist on getting an NST first.  If she's not in distress, question your OB as to why she wants to push for an immediate induction.

I think that's all I can do right now. Thank you ladies. I wasn't sure if I was crazy or not for not wanting to do what my OB does.
  • Keep us posted.  Thoughts and prayers that everything works out!
  • Good luck!
    And keep us posted.
  • Ahh I would ask her again & have her tell you why she thinks you should be induced instead of waiting...thats terrible if she wants too just so she doesnt have to deal with you anymore. good luck!
  • I agree with some of the PP. I'd ask for a NST, check fluids, monitoring ect. Being induced before baby is ready, or you're ready, is tough. It's a hard labor. Knowledge is power, arm yourself with some. It's your body & your baby....

  • Knowledge is power, I would get a second opinion if I were you. My OB is also induction happy even though I haven't had a single issue (ftm), so we're compromising on waiting until I am 42 weeks. Currently 36 weeks, 3 days. To get to that compromise, it took a long discussion, almost changed OBs
