Preparing to go back to work?

Thus far, I have done very little pumping. I am starting to pump now to have some in storage, but would love suggestions on things people did to prepare themselves to have enough supply.

Also, since I haven't pumped formally, I am not sure how many ounces the baby eats every so I have no idea how much to send on first day of daycare. suggestions? (baby will be 3 months)

Re: Preparing to go back to work?

  • I would pump after my morning feeding and get anywhere from 3oz-5oz

For the first day of day are I sent 3 4oz bottles and then 2 4oz bags of frozen for just in case. It took is about a week or 2 to get into a routine and know how
to to send. On the weekends I try to pump 3 times a day to build up a stash.

She is now 6 months and I send 3 5oz and 1 2oz(for rice cereal)

    Hope this helped! Good luck

  • Most recommendations are an ounce for every hour apart. You don't need much more than a days worth of milk when you start because presumably what you pump at work is what you can send in the next day, but of course it's always nice to have a little extra just in case. For me, DD is at DC from around 7-5, so 3 3-4 oz bottles was what we needed. Now that she's older (7 months), her feedings are more spaced out so it's 2 4-5 oz bottles plus food (I nurse right before drop off so her first bottle isn't until late morning at this point).
  • Thanks

  • We sent DS to daycare at 3 mo. and sent 6 bottles of 2 oz each since we weren't sure either and didn't want to waste any liquid gold. The daycare said he was drinking 2 bottles (4 oz) at a time so the next day we sent 4 - 4oz bottles and he drank 2-3 of them. He didn't always finish all of it but for the most part he did. I would usually output an average of 3 oz total per pumping session so I usually had just enough to send.
