Hip pain...solution?

edited January 2015 in April 2015 Moms
Hi everyone, I know there have been several posts on hip pain, but I thought I'd start a new one because I found a complete solution for my pain and wanted to spread the word. My hip pain was waking me up several times throughout the night. Whatever side I was lying on would become crazy sore and I'd toss and turn to the other side. A pillow between the legs didn't work for me and sometimes made it worse. Our mattress is firm- not crazy firm, but definitely on the firmer side. So forked over some money and bought a 3" thick memory foam matress topper. What a difference! My hip pain is totally gone. I know not everyone's pain is the same as mine, but if yours acts up at night and is aggrevated by side sleeping, I highly recommend the investment in a memory foam topper. Be sure to get one 3 or 4 inches thick... I've read that thinner ones are inneffective. Hope this helps some of you!

I did the same thing.. although I dont think mine is thick enough. Ours is maybe an inch or two thick and helps a little but not like I would like it to. So I definitely recommend getting the thicker one like you've suggested. DH loves it though for his back. He's got scoliosis pretty bad. At least one of us is getting some use out of it. We got ours from walmart. I might need to look into the thicker ones:/ Good looking out OP!
  • We did the same thing a few weeks ago, it hasn't made any difference. It felt great for a week or so, but now the pain has returned. :-q
  • I just removed my foam mattress topper last night because my body was not getting enough support.  Glad to hear it's working for you.  Last night was the first night in a while that I got any rest.

It's interesting....I got a fitbit as a Christmas present and have been tracking my actual sleep...it's scary...restless at least 18X in a 9 hour period with only 4 hours of actual sleep.

  •  I'm not sure if bub just moved or if it actually helped that much, but i got an 'egg crate' foam topper for my bed and since then seem to get less pain when i sleep.
  • We just purchased a mattress that has a foam topper or "foam feel"... Couldn't tell you which one or brand. It was definitely super comfortable at first (will be a great bed, post pregnancy), but I think I sink in too much now, I wake up with my lower back and hips aching I'm about to start sleeping in the guest room. But I'm glad it's working for you!

@HappyBird99‌ I stopped using Fitbit at night because my sleep stats were sooo depressing!! Hope you all find peaceful slumber soon.
  • I logged on this morning just to find this answer.  I suspected a memory foam topper was the solution, but glad to hear that others think it has been helpful.  Thanks so much!

We have a memory foam king-size mattress and OMFG.  It's the best. The bed for our Costa Rican babymoon last week was a barely-full-sized rock solid piece-of-crap and I didn't have my Boppy pillow, just a regular bed pillow for support. DH says I nearly shoved him out of the bed every night because I was tossing and turning so much. My hip pain was so bad it made me dread sleeping every night.
  • I have a king foam mattress and I still toss and turn all night long because of hip pain :-/. Glad you found some relief.
  • My husband switched our memory foam mattress out with just the memory foam topper (which is much softer) on top of a regular mattress about two months ago and it's amazing! I can sleep on my stomach because it's giving without me squishing baby into my back, and it took care of my limbs going numb. I haven't had hip pain and the mattress could be why! I'm so glad he changed it out so early. He only did it because the mattress we had made our bed really high and I was having trouble getting in and out of bed with the bump haha.
  • The hip and back pain are causing me some serious insomnia. I browse the internet every night until I'm so exhausted that I just can't keep my eyes open any longer. I may need to try a foam topper. I can not wait to be able to sleep like a normal person again. I would take waking up several times a night with a new born 100 times over not being able to sleep because of this awful pain.

  • I have a tempurpedic mattress that cost a fortune and it doesn't always do the trick. Lately I've been sleeping propped up with pillows (heartburn) with a pillow under my knees and it has helped tremendously. Also, maternity massages! I tell the massage therapist to go to town on my hips and butt and I get relief for several days. Also, try stretching several times a day paying careful attention to your quads and hip flexors.
  • @schambo23‌ I like my temperpedic mattress pad better than my temperpedic mattress at the moment because it's way softer. It's also considerably less expensive than the full blown mattress. Pre-pregnancy I liked the more firm mattress though so I'm still super glad I have it.
  • Thanks for posting. Will for sure be looking into this.

  • Well, call it pregnancy brain or whatever, but when I thought I ordered a king-sized mattress topper, I had ordered a full instead.  If you have one of these, you can imagine what a pain it was to get that thing rolled back up and back in the box to return it.  Oy.

That said, my hip pain has subsided somewhat, and the pain is now mostly in my low back (top of my pelvis).  The heating wrap I use while at my desk helps as does Tylenol.  The body pillow at night is good as is another pillow behind me for additional support.  Things seem to be looking up!

  • For my hip/pelvic pain, I never found relief in firmer or softer surfaces. I eventually talked to a friend who is a physical therapist about my issues. She took a look at me and figured out that my hips were actually out of alignment and gave me some exercises to do. They have helped me significantly, even at night. Now, all that really wakes me up is needing to lay flat instead of propped up (or visa versa), having to pee, or because my dog laid on top of my leg and it went numb.
