Breastfeeding

? for mommies using nipple shield who bottle feed also.

I am trying to wean from the shield with my 3 week old (we use it 50% of the time).  We've used it from the start at the hospital since he had trouble latching.  My nipple aren't flat or inverted but he was on IV antibiotics/sugar water for 5 days.  Anyway my LC said it's only a band aid to the problem.

My question is that I would like to start having DH use pumped milk to help with night feedings but fear the bottle is an even worse issue with the goal of latching w/o the shield.  Did you/when  would you start introducing the bottle?

  • I've been using the nipple shield with my LO from the very beginning. At this point I have given up on not using it, since she latches so well with it and I can't even get her to attempt to latch without. She is one month old today, and we introduced the bottle four days ago. The first time I fed her after she had the bottle it took her a minute or two to suck the right way after, but since then she hasn't had any issues going back and forth between bottle and breast. Sorry I cant speak to getting rid of the shield and using a bottle since I think we're stuck using it.

  • My little one just self weaned from the shield at 10 weeks when I had zero hope this would happen. We introduced a bottle at 3 weeks. I feel like the comotomo bottle (Amazon) actually taught her how to latch and helped us to get rid of the shield. I swear by it! Best of luck!

  • My 34 weeker went back and forth with the shield and a bottle from the get go. Because she was so early she had a bottle first before she was even allowed to attempt breastfeeding. In order to be discharged she had to take full feedings by bottle. We transitioned to full breastfeeding with the shield by 10 weeks but then I had to go back to work at 12w so she had bottles during the day on weekdays/ mom only with the shield evenings/weekends. She gave up the shield on her own at 6 months and is still nursing without it at 16 months.
  • I used a nipple shield initially as well, and we did not wean off it until around 3-4 months. I would try every couple of weeks, and finally he was able to get a good latch. I introduced LO to a bottle at 1 week, and it didn't seem to affect his latch at all. There is a great book- "on balancing breast and bottle" - that explains how to bottlefeed a breastfed baby, and has great pictures of good latches, along with types of bottles and nipples to try.
