TTMA white cow's milk

Since our babies are coming up on one year, I've been thinking a lot about the transition to white cow's milk (WCM).

I'm apprehensive about going cold turkey with LO. Information I got from a nutritionist says he should have a cup of milk with every meal/snack, which is what we're doing now with formula. I'm worried he won't be getting enough nutrition from his solids. Also we are going to have to break the bottle before bed habit.

Tell me what your thoughts/plans/questions are about the transition to WCM!

  • I've been wondering the same thing..
I think a bottle of whole milk can still be given at bedtime..at least that was my plan!
Right now she has about 4 bottles a day plus water with her meals. I think she is transitioning to three bottles soon - morning, after lunch and bedtime.

  • I'm curious about this too! My hope is that we can transition to WCM bottles for before naps and we can nurse in the morning and before bedtime.  Not sure if that's a fantasy or something that can really happen...
  • My first goal is to get rid of the bottle. Right now LO gets bottles in the morning and before bed. His afternoon bottle is now formula from a sippy. When he is 10 months old we will switch another bottle to a sippy. At 11 months all bottles will be sippies. I don't really want to put cow's milk in bottles.

When he is a year we plan on switching to cow's milk if the doctor agrees. Hoping it should be a smooth transition!

Question: How do you plan to introduce the cow's milk? Slowly replace all formula feeds? I am also nervous about going cold turkey.

  • I haven't used any formula - LO is EBF. I introduced cow's milk about 1 week ago. I am only using one sippy cup once in a while for convenience. At 12 months, I'll start to wean more formally - gradually replacing nursing sessions with cow's milk and will probably keep morning and evening nursing sessions for a while longer - maybe up to around 15/16 months.

My LO eats A LOT of solids though. If he weren't a good eater, I'd probably be a little more hesitant to move on to cow's milk. I guess once you start it becomes more important to provide well rounded meals.
  • I totally forgot to ask my pediatrician about cows milk. I will have to call and see what she advises... we would love to start cutting out formula (so damn expensive). I am worried about the bedtime bottle too... but as christinanoelle says, there really isn't any reason it cant be a bottle of cows milk before bed... I think?

PS- I really wish LO wasn't so resistant to the sippy cup. Im working on it!

  • Our ped said it was fine to start weaning to cow's milk at the 9 month appt. It sounds like others have been told otherwise though.
  • Yeah mine didn't mention starting to wean to cows milk until 12 months.... I would like to see what my LO thinks of it....
  • Liam is EBF and a great solids eater. When he's 10 months (2 weeks) were going to introduce WCM in sippy with meals. (Not planning to put WCM in bottles ever...). Our Ped said she was fine with him being completely on WCM at 11 months (I'm traveling when he's 11.5 months and will not be able to pump during the day, so I will be weaning - at least day feedings - by then).

  • The nutritionist I spoke to said we could start introducing WCM at 9 months, but I read somewhere that this is a Canadian thing and in the US they say 12 months?
  • ^^^ could be since I'm Canadian :)
  • My pedi says none until 11 months. That being said DS wouldn't take a sippy until I put milk in it. At elven months he had milk cold turkey. DD doesn't like a sippy either so I will do the same with her. No bottles or formula after 12 months is how I do it.
  • Pedi didn't say anything.  Once he is a year I plan on putting WCM in his sippy to let him start trying it, but I'm not deliberately weaning or anything.  We'll keep nursing as long as he wants (within reason), but I want some freedom so I want him drinking some WCM.
