Prenatal Massages, how awesome are they?

Alright all you gorgeous mamas, have any of you experienced a prenatal massage? If so....how was it? Was it worth every penny? haha I've never had one and the closest I've gotten was either the pedicure I had while pregnant and the kind Korean woman rubbed my calves for 10 minutes or my hubby sort of swirled his hands around on my back while he was engrossed in a TV show... :/

  • Massages period are amazeballs. I'm practically drooling just thinking about one.

  • 110% worth it. I am going to sound like a broken record as the last few times I have posted have been about massage but I LOVE my massage therapist and recommend pregnant or not everyone find one they love too and see them as often as they can afford!!
  • I love massages. I get a deep tissue every 6 weeks because of all of the pain in my shoulders from my job. I went on Saturday and she did not want to do deep tissue so I had a prenatal message and felt terrible after. I had more back pain, nausea and some cramping. Now I'm nervous to get another one. Anyone else have a bad experience?
  • Prenatal massages are tricky. Because your muscles and joints loosen when you're pregnant (to accommodate the growing baby) you need to make sure it's with someone who knows what they're doing.

I had one when I was 7-8 months pregnant with my first by a physical therapist whose speciality is woman's health and it was amazing!

I did not enjoy my prenatal massage last time around either. I was further along and she didn't have me elevated enough and I started to sweat and see double. In general I love massages, but prenatal ones are not for me.
  • I normally get a massage at least once per month but haven't during the first trimester. I have my first prenatal massage scheduled next week, can't wait!

  • I'll take a pedicure or a facial over a prenatal massage. It wasn't worth it to me.

  • I'm going for my first prenatal massage next week. The spa I'm going to is specifically designed for pregnant women and those who have just had babies. All there tables are designed to accommodate growing bellies and the therapists are specifically trained for prenatal.
  • I've been dying to be pampered just a little bit, and a massage just sounded so flippin amazing.
  • I had a prenatal massage with our first (she just turned 12). I was about 7 1/2 months along, and it was amazing! And it couldn't have come at a better time. I was very stressed because I hadn't felt her move at all the day before the massage, we went to the ER to make sure everything was ok. Apparently, she was being a stinker and was facing my back. The massage got her to flip and me to relax!!! I definitely think they are worth every penny, and I would like one this time around too!!!
  • I loved my prenatal massages during my first pregnancy. My massage therapist refuses to massage any woman in the first tri and early second tri so I won't be going this round for a while. They're awesome though!

  • Always make sure you go to someone who specializes in prenatal massage. Also, it's generally not suggested to get a massage during your first trimester. There is a slight risk of miscarriage. Though it is small, most places will not perform them during the first tri.

  • I had a prenatal massage at a spa on retreat before, it was nice and I just wanted to relax in my room afterward. But it wasn't as good as a deep tissue massage.

My first one this pregnancy is on Wednesday now that I'm in second tri. Can't wait! Last pregnancy I had them probably monthly and they were invaluable!

  • Prenatal massages for me are not all one way it the other. I just had my first one for this pregnancy last weekend and the next two days after were rough! I was very tired and often dizzy when I stood up. I read that it could be from the massage, which stimulates circulation through the muscles and therefore makes ones body work harder. My masseuse was using a lot of pressure towards the end if the massage (around my neck and shoulders) it hurt and I could have asked her to let up but when I am not pregnant I just go with it. Now I know to take it easy when I am KU!

Last time I enjoyed every prenatal massage I had during pregnancy (about six) except one with a strong woman who I had twice before had a good experience with. It was either the last (when I was 41+ weeks along) or one of the last (at about 38w) I received . I seemed to be properly supported but I nearly passed out! Not fun :(. I did start to feel it coming on and didn't day anything until I began to feel sick. Next time I know what to look for and when to speak up.

So, for the most part prenatal massages have been great, but some can be difficult and IME you just have to listen to your body in that moment and don't hesitate to say something to your masseuse if it feels off.

  • I had a prenatal massage with each of my older girls at the edamame spa within pea in a pod. AMAZING. At nine months pregnant the body has gone through so much change and stress and they know just what to do.

I'm going for a regular swedish and a facial, thanks to my momma for buying me th em for xmas. She also bought me a prenatal massage to use anytime after 20 weeks :)--apparently prior to that they just adjust regular swedish to the pregnant mom and don't consider them "prenatal" lol--beats me to why. But I am Soooo excited for tomorrow
