Parenting after 35

no longer on bill/more bleeding

Wasn't sure what board to ask this question on but figured I was safe here with this age group. After having my 2nd child I decided not to go back on the pill. I have been on it for about 20 years. Now that I am approaching 40 I decided not to continue with it. Now my periods are sooooo heavy. Has anyone had this happen? I don't know what else to relate it to except that I never went back on pill. Just curious if this is common. I will call OB about it too.

Re: no longer on bill/more bleeding

  • I haven't been on the pill in forever but I do remember being told after having a baby your periods could change.  It didn't effect me too much.  I have noticed at the start of my period it is a lot heavier than before I had kids but nothing crazy.  Friends who used to not even notice when they had their periods before having kids now were dealing with all sorts of heavy bleeding and crapming and other fun things.  It could be just a change in your body after having kids?  Good luck.  That is no fun!

  • I was on the pill for 18 years and then switched to a non-hormonal IUD.  My periods were much heavier without the hormones.  This was all before having a baby, and my period hasn't returned yet, so I don't know what additional effect having a kiddo will bring.

  • My first 6 mod with both kids, my periods were really heavy. They've now calmed back down, thank God! DS is now 9 mos, and really only the last 2 mos have they been back to normal.

  • I went through a lot of changes both after going off the pill and after having my daughter. It took a year post partum before I felt like my cycle was really getting back to normal. I think it just takes our hormones awhile to find their natural balance again in both cases.
