How often does your OB want to see you?

I'm a FTM 8w2d and saw my new OB for first time 2 days ago. I was followed by fertility dr until now (ironically this wound up being spontaneous twins!) and I was referred to MFM dr for high risk of twins and my age (40) and generic counseling and nuchal ultrasound all to be done at 12 wks. She wants to see me after. Just wondering if waiting a while month before I go back seems right?? When you hear about others having such heartbreaking events occur, makes me nervous waiting a whole month. Thanks for your input!

Re: How often does your OB want to see you?

  • Yes, I think when we get used to seeing the RE weekly, the month-long wait between visits feels like an eternity. I couldn't get in to see my OB until 11 weeks and was pretty worried when she said we'd only have monthly visits, an optional NT scan at 12 weeks, the A/S at 20 weeks, and much further down the road, she might increase the frequency to every two weeks. Honestly, I feel like my OB is overly nonchalant about the twins, but with my insurance we see a group of OBs and there's a very good chance I won't even have "my" OB when we deliver. What calmed my fears was that when I got to the MFM for the NT scan, they made it very clear that the twin diagnosis is significant, and now I have monthly ultrasounds for the next couple of months, or more frequently if there's anything needing closer monitoring. I feel like the MFM is going to take good care of me. If you're not happy or worried, let them know. I've heard some women on here say their docs took were pretty understanding and got them in an extra time for peace of mind. I think, though, you're on a pretty typical routine (at least compared to my experience.) It also helped me to get a doppler, but I say that with caution because for some people it can cause even more anxiety if you can't hear the HBs and that's compounded with twins because it can be extremely difficult to know if you're hearing two separate HBs. So maybe not a good idea if you are the worrying type. Welcome, congrats on the twins!

My schedule is similar to PP. I've seen OB every 4 weeks and only just saw MFM for first time at 21wks (I think that's normal). We are scheduled to see MFM in mid-Feb (approx +5 wks since last appt).
My OB will switch to every 2 wks at around 30 wks...hope this helps!

Oh I should add I'm a fertility grad and can relate to how it feels to be seen less frequently.
  • I saw Ob monthly starting at 12.5 weeks and didn't start seeing him every 2 weeks until I hit 30 weeks and I'm still seeing him every 2 weeks until scheduled c section (I'm 36 wks). Also, I got used to ultrasounds with my fertility specialist (weekly) for the first few weeks and was surprised when I started seeing Ob, that there weren't that many ultrasounds done.
I did meet with genetic counselor and nutritionist at 13 weeks (Ob 1st appt, he recommended it) and since my insurance covered it, I was okay with those appts. That's actually how I found out the twins sex - with the Y chromosome blood test and it was later confirmed there's 2 girls at anatomy ultrasound.

  • I see my OB every two weeks at my request- also an IF grad and helped put my mind at ease. I had an u/s at the n/t scan, cervix check at 16 weeks, a/s at 20 weeks and cervix check at 22 weeks. I'll go back for a growth scan at 24 weeks and another at 28. Not sure the plan after that.
